About the 2025 Rivian R1S

2nd generation, first model year

Rivian positions the R1S as a seven-seat electric SUV that handles family transportation, long-distance travel, towing and genuine trail use in one vehicle. Its main differences from other three-row EVs are adjustable air suspension, strong off-road geometry, multiple terrain modes, a large front trunk, flexible cargo space and sports-car-like acceleration. The core idea is an electric family SUV suited to daily errands, road trips and backcountry travel without changing vehicles.

The 2025 R1S remains a seven-seat electric SUV, with Dual Standard serving everyday family use and Dual Max emphasizing driving range of up to 410 miles. Tri Max adds an 850-hp three-motor system and a more premium Ascend cabin, while Quad raises output to 1,025 hp and controls each wheel with its own motor. The limited California Dune Edition builds on Tri-Motor performance with sand-focused features and extra underbody protection.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
Rivian-built dual-motor drive units arrive with reengineered battery packs. The Standard battery switches to lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry, and the 850-hp Tri Max joins the lineup. Dual Max range rises from 355–380 miles for 2024 to 370–410 miles for 2025, depending on configuration.
Safety
The new Rivian Autonomy Platform uses 11 cameras, five radars and two powerful processors to support the R1S's driver-assistance systems.
Structural
Reworked suspension bushings, air springs, adaptive-damper tuning and hydraulic body-control hardware improve ride behavior and control. A heat-pump climate system also improves cold-weather efficiency and cabin warm-up.
Styling
The body shape stays largely familiar, but the headlights, taillights and full-width light bars use new hardware with broader lighting functions. The limited California Dune Edition adds a desert-themed appearance, reinforced underbody protection and sand-focused equipment.
Tech
A new zonal electrical layout reduces wiring and combines vehicle computers, while the screen interface receives its largest update since the R1S launched.

How the 2026 Rivian R1S compares

For 2026, the Rivian R1S adds the second-generation Quad-Motor model, a 1,025-hp version with one motor controlling each wheel. Otherwise, this is a focused trim-and-equipment update rather than a redesign.

“A solid vehicle with great performance, range, and storage space. The only major feature missing from the vehicle is Apple CarPlay.”

“It is excellent and very fun to drive. I really like it overall and would recommend given it's probably still best in class for a full size SUV, especially if you're looking for a longer range SUV. My biggest complaint is the road noise though which is very bad when considering the price point. It is also not at the same level of luxury as other comparably priced vehicles from a finishes / material standpoint.”
