About the 2024 Toyota Tacoma

4th generation, first year of the redesign

Toyota positions the Tacoma as a midsize pickup that blends real truck utility with a strong outdoor-adventure identity. Its core appeal is durability, off-road credibility, and a broad range of personalities, from simple work-truck SR models to premium Limited versions and serious trail rigs like TRD Pro and Trailhunter. For most buyers, Tacoma is the easier-to-live-with alternative to a full-size truck: practical bed utility, strong resale reputation, and genuine trail capability in a more manageable size.

The range runs from the work-first SR and everyday SR5 to the road-focused TRD Sport, trail-ready TRD Off-Road, comfort-focused Limited, and specialized hybrid TRD Pro and Trailhunter models. Highlights include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on SR, a 14-inch touchscreen and head-up display on Limited, and a locking rear differential that helps maintain traction on TRD Off-Road. Trailhunter has specialized suspension, an air compressor, and underbody protection for off-grid travel, while TRD Pro has FOX shocks and IsoDynamic front seats for desert driving.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
A new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine family replaces the older non-turbo engines, and the first Tacoma hybrid joins the range. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid powers new Limited, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter versions; TRD Pro becomes hybrid-only.
Styling
The redesign brings a new cabin layout and more distinct trim themes. Trailhunter joins as an overlanding model, TRD PreRunner returns as a lifted 2WD XtraCab with a 6-foot bed, and Trail Special Edition is dropped. TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport gain standard LED headlights, while their power driver's seats change from standard to optional. Limited alloy wheels also move from standard to optional.
Safety
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 becomes standard across the lineup. Blind-spot monitoring also changes from optional to standard on SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road.
Tech
A new touchscreen system brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Depending on trim, the redesigned cabin also has larger touchscreens, digital gauge displays, a head-up display, surround-view cameras, and a JBL audio system with a removable speaker.
Structural
The Tacoma moves to Toyota's TNGA-F truck frame and chassis. Electric power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, an electronic parking brake, and trim-specific suspension setups are part of the redesign.

How the 2025 Toyota Tacoma compares

The 2025 Toyota Tacoma is mostly a carryover after its 2024 redesign. The main change is that Adaptive Variable Suspension, which adjusts the ride as road conditions change, is standard on every Limited.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma fully redesigned?

Yes. The 2024 Tacoma begins the fourth generation with Toyota's TNGA-F truck platform, new engines, a redesigned cabin, updated steering and brakes, and new trim-specific suspension setups.

Does the 2024 Toyota Tacoma have a hybrid powertrain?

Yes. The 2024 model is the first Tacoma with Toyota's i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. Hybrid versions include Limited, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, with TRD Pro and Trailhunter sold only as hybrids for this year.

Which trims joined or left the 2024 Toyota Tacoma lineup?

The 2024 lineup adds the Trailhunter, brings back TRD PreRunner, and introduces i-FORCE MAX versions of Limited, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro. The gas-only TRD Pro and Trail Special Edition leave the lineup, while the TRD Pro name continues on a new hybrid-only model.

What safety features became standard on the 2024 Toyota Tacoma?

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 became standard across the 2024 Tacoma lineup. Blind-spot monitoring also became standard on SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road after being optional on those trims for 2023.

Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma a major upgrade over the 2023 model?

Yes. The 2024 Tacoma is a ground-up redesign rather than a light update, with a new truck platform, turbocharged engines, the first Tacoma hybrid, a more modern cabin, added safety technology, and new steering, braking, and suspension hardware. The 2023 model is the better fit only for someone who specifically prefers the previous generation and its older non-turbo engine lineup.
