About the 2022 Toyota Tundra

3rd generation, first year of the full redesign.

Toyota positioned the 2022 Tundra as its toughest, most capable, and most advanced Tundra yet. The core pitch was a full-size pickup that still leans on Toyota's quality, durability, and reliability reputation, but finally adds the towing tools, cabin comfort, safety tech, and infotainment expected in a modern half-ton truck. It is meant to be equally believable as a work truck, family road-trip truck, tow vehicle, and off-road pickup depending on trim.

The SR is the straightforward work truck, while the SR5 adds more towing hardware and everyday convenience. Limited introduces the 14-inch touchscreen and a more comfortable cabin, while the TRD Pro pairs standard hybrid power with a lifted off-road suspension and underbody protection. The new Capstone is the luxury flagship, with standard hybrid power, upgraded leather, walnut trim, a head-up display, and extra sound insulation.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The old V8 and 6-speed automatic were replaced by twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engines and a 10-speed automatic. Hybrid power joined the 1794 Edition, Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro; TRD Pro became hybrid-only, and the new Capstone also used the hybrid as standard.
Styling
The truck received a complete exterior and cabin redesign. The new Capstone added a more luxury-focused look and interior with upgraded leather and open-pore walnut trim.
Safety
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 became standard across the lineup, bringing a newer set of driver-assistance features. Blind-spot monitoring also became standard on Limited.
Tech
Toyota introduced a new touchscreen system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Upper trims gained a 14-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, and new camera-based trailer guidance features.
Structural
The redesign brought a new boxed frame, an aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and a coil-spring rear suspension designed to replace the previous leaf-spring setup.

How the 2023 Toyota Tundra compares

The 2023 Toyota Tundra is a carryover year with no major product changes after the truck’s full 2022 redesign. Its powertrains, structure, safety suite, and cabin technology remain essentially the same.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest difference between the 2022 and 2021 Toyota Tundra?

The biggest difference is that the 2022 Tundra is a complete third-generation redesign. It replaces the previous truck’s V8, 6-speed automatic, frame, rear suspension, cabin technology, and safety suite with new hardware and systems.

Does the 2022 Toyota Tundra still have a V8?

No, the 2022 Toyota Tundra does not have a V8. Every version uses a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic, either by itself or as part of the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system.

Is every 2022 Toyota Tundra a hybrid?

No, not every 2022 Tundra is a hybrid. The SR and SR5 use gas-only V6 power, while hybrid versions joined the Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition; the TRD Pro and new Capstone use the hybrid system as standard.

What chassis changes did the 2022 Toyota Tundra receive?

The 2022 Tundra received a new boxed frame, an aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and a coil-spring rear suspension. These are core structural changes, not just cosmetic updates.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tundra a major upgrade over the 2021 model?

Yes, the 2022 Tundra is a major upgrade if you want newer powertrains, a 10-speed automatic, modern touchscreens, standard driver-assistance technology, and a redesigned chassis. The 2021 model is the one to consider only if keeping the older V8 is a priority.

“The truck is very innovative and great for someone who needs a daily driver, road trip vehicle, and off-road capable truck all in one vehicle.”

“Brakes squeal when cold. Hate that. Towing capacity is great. Pulled 31' travel trailer 1000 miles with no problems at all. Overall, a nice truck.”

“My tundra is awesome, but the lane centering is awful and so is my gas mileage, regardless of whether I'm driving easy or hard.”
