About the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL

7th generation (R232), first model year and complete redesign

Mercedes-AMG positioned the SL as an open-air luxury grand tourer with genuine sports-car performance. Its core appeal is the combination of a powerful V8, secure AWD traction, agile rear-wheel steering, a richly equipped two-plus-two cabin, and comfort suited to longer drives. Compared with harder-edged sports cars, the SL places greater emphasis on seating comfort and everyday usability while still delivering the speed, sound, and chassis technology expected from AMG.

Mercedes positioned the redesigned AMG SL as a V8 roadster that balances long-distance comfort with serious performance hardware. The SL 55 uses a 469-hp V8, while the SL 63 raises output to 577 horsepower and adds hydraulic active suspension, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, and Race mode. Touring versions emphasize comfort features such as massaging front seats and Burmester audio, while Performance versions add a front-axle lift for steep driveways and ramps.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
Two versions of a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 debuted: 469 horsepower in the SL 55 and 577 horsepower in the SL 63. Both use a 9-speed automatic, and fully variable AWD became standard across the US lineup for the first time in SL history.
Styling
The AMG SL received a completely new exterior and cabin design as part of the full redesign.
Safety
The redesigned lineup included forward-collision assistance, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and surround-view camera hardware as standard equipment. A broader driver-assistance package remained optional.
Tech
The new digital cabin brought an adjustable 11.9-inch center touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Burmester audio.
Structural
Mercedes introduced a dedicated AMG-developed structure, a 2+2 seating layout, a five-link suspension design, and standard rear-axle steering.

“the air scarf should blow cold air too. The radio and climate control and the convertible top should have buttons separate from the computer.”
