2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The biggest change for 2022 is the arrival of the all-new fifth-generation two-row Grand Cherokee. Jeep also launches the first Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid, making this a major expansion year rather than a simple update.

About the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Grand Cherokee family in transition: fifth-generation WL two-row is in its first year for 2022, Grand Cherokee L (WL three-row) is in its second year, Grand Cherokee 4xe is in its first year, and the prior-generation WK continues in limited form as Grand Cherokee WK.

Jeep positions the Grand Cherokee as the brand's do-everything midsize SUV: more premium and more capable off pavement than a typical family crossover, but still comfortable and easy to live with every day. The 2022 range broadens that idea rather than changing it, giving shoppers a two-row version, a three-row L, and a 4xe plug-in hybrid while keeping Jeep's core themes of 4x4 credibility, towing, upscale cabin design, and useful family space.

The 2022 range covers several roles: a redesigned two-row SUV, the three-row Grand Cherokee L, the 4xe plug-in hybrid, and the older Grand Cherokee WK. Laredo emphasizes modern screens and core safety features, Trailhawk adds serious off-road hardware, and Summit Reserve brings Palermo leather, front-seat massage, and a 19-speaker McIntosh audio system.

What changed, by category

Structural
The fifth-generation two-row Grand Cherokee arrives with a new WL platform, body and cabin. It joins the three-row Grand Cherokee L, while the previous-generation model remains on sale as the Grand Cherokee WK Laredo X.
Powertrain
The first Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid joins the range. Plug-in-hybrid versions are added to Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve and Trailhawk, along with a base 4xe; the gas-powered Trailhawk leaves the lineup.
Styling
The redesigned two-row model gets an all-new exterior and interior. New versions include the dark-trimmed Altitude and the more richly finished Summit Reserve.
Safety
On Trailhawk, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams and lane-departure warning move from optional to standard equipment.
Tech
The redesigned two-row models receive a more digital cabin with updated touchscreens and gauges. Navigation becomes standard on Laredo E, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are featured throughout the new two-row range.

How the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee compares

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a light-update model led by Trailhawk becoming exclusive to the 4xe plug-in-hybrid powertrain. It is not a redesign.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee redesigned?

Yes. The two-row 2022 Grand Cherokee begins the all-new fifth-generation WL design, with a new body, cabin and electronics. The three-row Grand Cherokee L was already on the newer platform, while the older WK body continues for 2022 as the Grand Cherokee WK Laredo X.

Does the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee have a plug-in hybrid?

Yes. The Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid launches for 2022 with 375 horsepower. The 4xe range includes base, Overland, Summit, Summit Reserve and off-road-focused Trailhawk versions.

What is the difference between the 2022 Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L and Grand Cherokee WK?

The standard 2022 Grand Cherokee is the redesigned two-row model, while the Grand Cherokee L has a longer body and three rows of seats. The Grand Cherokee WK is the outgoing two-row generation kept on sale in Laredo X form.

What changed for the 2022 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk?

The 2022 Trailhawk moves to the redesigned WL body, and its plug-in-hybrid version becomes the Trailhawk powertrain offered this year as the gas version leaves the lineup. Adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams and lane-departure warning also become standard, while the power moonroof changes from standard to optional.

Is a 2022 Grand Cherokee a major change from a 2021 model?

Yes, if you are comparing the main two-row models. The 2022 two-row Grand Cherokee has a new generation of body, cabin and electronics, and 2022 also introduces the 4xe plug-in hybrid; however, the 2022 Grand Cherokee WK remains closely related to the older 2021 design.
