About the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

4th-generation Silverado HD, first year of the redesign.

Chevrolet positions the Silverado 3500 HD as a heavy-duty truck built first for towing, hauling, and jobsite use, but with more cabin space and technology than the old truck. The core appeal is broad configuration choice, very high tow ratings, strong gas or diesel powertrains, and towing-focused camera and trailer-management technology. Against rivals, Chevrolet leans heavily on its towing-tech story, the diesel/Allison pairing, and a lineup that runs from basic work trucks to the luxury-focused High Country.

The Work Truck is the job-focused version, with durable flooring, a 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, and large trailering mirrors. LT adds everyday convenience, while LTZ brings leather, heated seats, LED lighting, and an 8-inch touchscreen. High Country is the luxury-focused model, with ventilated front seats, navigation, Bose audio, wireless charging, and its own front-end design.

What changed, by category

A new 6.6-liter gas V8 is standard across the lineup. The 6.6-liter Duramax diesel is paired with a new Allison 10-speed automatic, while the prior flexible-fuel powertrain is dropped.

The redesigned truck gets a new, larger heavy-duty body. Each trim has a more distinct look, from the Work Truck’s simple black grille treatment to the High Country’s unique front end and LED lighting.
Tech
The touchscreen becomes standard on LT and LTZ, and LTZ gains a standard heated steering wheel. The redesign also brings a broader set of towing-focused technology.
Structural
A new frame, larger cab, and expanded cab, bed, and chassis-cab configurations improve space and work flexibility. Towing and payload capability increase, and larger redesigned trailering mirrors become standard.

How the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 compares

The most important change for the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD is a higher maximum towing capacity of 36,000 pounds in the right diesel configuration. Otherwise, this is a light-update year for the heavy-duty truck introduced for 2020.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 a new generation?

Yes. The 2020 Silverado 3500 HD starts the fourth generation with a new body, frame, larger cab, stronger towing and payload capability, and updated powertrains.

What engine changes did the 2020 Silverado 3500 receive?

The 2020 Silverado 3500 gets a new standard 6.6-liter gas V8. Its 6.6-liter Duramax diesel is paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic, and the former flexible-fuel option is dropped.

Does the 2020 Silverado 3500 tow more than the 2019 model?

Yes. The redesign raises towing capability, although the exact limit depends on the cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, and equipment. Gas-powered LT and Work Truck configurations show maximum ratings ranging from 14,500 to 16,800 pounds for 2020, up from 13,000 to 15,000 pounds in 2019.

Is the 2020 Silverado 3500 roomier than the 2019 model?

Yes. The redesigned 2020 truck has a larger cab, and crew-cab rear legroom rises to 43.4 inches on LT and LTZ models. Other cab layouts have different seating space and measurements.

Which 2020 Silverado 3500 trims received more standard equipment?

LT and LTZ receive a standard touchscreen for 2020, replacing the prior optional setup. LTZ also makes the heated steering wheel standard, while High Country remains the luxury-focused trim with navigation, Bose audio, wireless charging, and heated and ventilated front seats.
