About the 2019 Nissan Altima

6th generation, first year of the redesign

Nissan positions the 2019 Altima as a tech-forward midsize sedan built for everyday commuting but with a stronger style and more confidence than older Altimas. The main selling points are easy phone integration, helpful highway-driving assists like ProPILOT Assist, available all-wheel drive for bad weather, and the optional VC-Turbo engine for buyers who want extra power without moving to a larger car. Compared with other family sedans, Nissan’s pitch leans heavily on driver-assistance tech, modern infotainment, and a more upscale cabin feel.

The 2.5 S serves as the practical starting point, with an 8-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, remote start, and a power driver’s seat. The SR emphasizes a sportier look with 19-inch wheels and LED headlights, while the SL and Platinum focus on comfort and technology with leather seating, navigation, Bose audio, and advanced driver assistance. VC-Turbo versions provide the stronger engine, and the limited-run Edition One adds special exterior details to the VC-T Platinum package.

What changed, by category

Structural
The Altima enters its sixth generation with a fully redesigned body and cabin.
Powertrain
A new direct-injected 2.5-liter four-cylinder replaces the previous base engine. A new 2.0-liter VC-Turbo four-cylinder replaces the former V6 and powers the new VC-T SR, VC-T Platinum, and limited Edition One. All-wheel drive also joins the U.S. Altima lineup for the first time.
Styling
The exterior and interior receive a complete redesign. The SR gains 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, and darker exterior trim, while the new Edition One adds a rear spoiler, dark gray wheels, and special badging.
Safety
Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking become standard throughout the lineup. ProPILOT driver assistance and a wider group of safety features, including rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, reach more trims.
Tech
Every trim gets a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an eight-way power driver’s seat. The new 2.5 Platinum adds a surround-view camera, driver-seat memory, and extra cabin lighting above the SL. Navigation becomes standard on the SL, while the SV gains standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

How the 2020 Nissan Altima compares

The main change for the 2020 Nissan Altima is wider standard coverage of Nissan’s driver-assist safety suite, which reaches the SR and every higher trim. This is a modest update after the 2019 redesign, not another major overhaul.

Frequently asked questions
