About the 2019 BMW X4

2nd generation (2019-2024), first year of the redesign

BMW positions the X4 as a sportier, more style-focused alternative to the X3: a compact luxury SUV with coupe-like roofline, sharper road manners, and strong performance. Its core appeal is not maximum cargo room, but combining SUV seating height and all-weather traction with a sleeker shape and a more athletic feel. For most shoppers, the X4 is the BMW compact SUV for style and driving character first, practicality second.

The xDrive30i is the everyday version, with a 248-hp turbo four-cylinder engine, AWD, a panoramic moonroof, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation system. The performance-focused M40i steps up to a 355-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine, sport-tuned suspension, stronger brakes, a sport exhaust, and more aggressive exterior trim.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The former xDrive28i is renamed xDrive30i and receives a 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The M40i continues as the six-cylinder performance model, with torque rising from 343 to 365 lb-ft.
Styling
The redesigned X4 has a larger, lower, more aerodynamic body and a more modern cabin. A panoramic moonroof is standard, while leather upholstery changes from standard to optional.
Safety
BMW adds updated active-safety and connected-service features, including Active Guard. LED headlights and automatic high beams change from optional to standard.
Tech
A 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation system with a newer BMW interface becomes standard, along with Apple CarPlay and built-in connected services. Premium audio changes from standard to optional.
Structural
The second-generation body has wider tracks and a lower center of gravity. It also provides more passenger and cargo room, including increased rear legroom and maximum cargo capacity.

“To date, very pleasant experience. Excellent interior, exceptionally smooth ride. Easy integration with phone/apple play.”

PHPhillip H.
2019 BMW X4 xDrive M40i

“The car is underpowered, and the selection of SPORT, COMFORT and ECO does not provide a good mix of handling and power. In addition, the front (with the M option) is like a box and bug catcher. There are too many openings and curves so it catches everything and is hard to keep clean. A streamlined front end would be much more desirable.”

RSRaymond S.
2019 BMW X4 xDrive 30i

“It is a great vehicle to drive. It handles like a sports car, but can comfortably seat 5 people and has plenty of cargo space.”
