2017 Jeep Compass: What's New, Specs & Features
Last updated August 4, 2026

The big change for 2017 is the launch of the fully redesigned, second-generation Jeep Compass. It arrived alongside the outgoing Compass, making 2017 a split year with two very different versions on sale.
About the 2017 Jeep Compass
Split year: first-generation Compass (MK, 2007-2017) is in its final year for Sport, Sport SE, Latitude, High Altitude Edition and 75th Anniversary; second-generation Compass (MP, 2017-present) debuts this year for All New Sport, All New Latitude, All New Trailhawk and All New Limited.
Jeep positions the Compass as a compact SUV for shoppers who want authentic Jeep styling and real foul-weather or trail confidence without stepping up to a larger Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. The core idea is a right-sized everyday SUV: easy enough for commuting and family use, but with more 4x4 credibility than most small crossovers. In its all-new form especially, Jeep leaned hard on the mix of premium design, usable technology and brand-typical capability as the Compass’s main reason to exist.
The redesigned Compass range runs from the straightforward Sport to the more comfortable Latitude and upscale Limited, which has leather-trimmed seats and an 8.4-inch touchscreen. The new Trailhawk is the off-road-focused model, with low-range four-wheel drive, extra ground clearance and protective skid plates. Older-generation trims, including Sport SE, High Altitude and 75th Anniversary, remained on sale briefly.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 2017 Jeep Compass a redesigned model?
Yes, but not every 2017 Compass is the redesigned version. Jeep launched the second-generation Compass during 2017 while continuing to sell the outgoing first-generation model for a short time.
Which 2017 Jeep Compass trims belong to the new generation?
The second-generation lineup consists of the All New Sport, All New Latitude, All New Limited and All New Trailhawk. Sport, Sport SE, Latitude, High Altitude Edition and 75th Anniversary are outgoing first-generation trims.
What engine and transmissions does the redesigned 2017 Compass use?
The redesigned North American 2017 Compass uses a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with six- or nine-speed transmissions, depending on the trim and drivetrain.
Is the 2017 Compass Trailhawk part of the redesign?
Yes. The Trailhawk joined with the second-generation Compass and adds low-range four-wheel drive, Rock mode, a one-inch suspension lift, skid plates and Hill Descent Control for off-road use.
Does the redesigned 2017 Jeep Compass have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes, on its upper touchscreen systems. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not standard across every redesigned 2017 Compass, so the installed infotainment system matters.
