2017 Honda CR-V

The biggest change for 2017 is a complete redesign that launches the fifth-generation Honda CR-V. It has a larger, roomier body, a new turbo engine on EX and higher trims, and a major expansion of safety and convenience technology.

About the 2017 Honda CR-V

5th generation (2017-2022), first year / full redesign

Honda positions the CR-V as a do-everything compact SUV for daily life: roomy for passengers, flexible for cargo, comfortable on long drives, and easy to use every day. Its core appeal is practical family usefulness without feeling stripped down or oversized. Compared with rivals, Honda leans hard on interior space, clever cargo packaging, strong fuel economy, and a broad safety-tech story, especially on EX and higher trims.

The LX is the straightforward version, pairing the redesigned, roomier cabin with a 184-hp 2.4-liter engine, automatic climate control, and an electric parking brake. The EX is the mainstream sweet spot, with a 190-hp turbo engine, Honda’s driver-assistance suite, heated front seats, a moonroof, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EX-L adds leather and a power tailgate, while Touring brings LED headlights, built-in navigation, stronger audio, and hands-free tailgate access.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
EX, EX-L, and Touring switch to a new 190-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. LX retains the 184-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder and continuously variable automatic transmission.
Styling
The CR-V receives a fully redesigned exterior and a more upscale cabin. A rear spoiler also becomes standard across the lineup.
Safety
Honda’s driver-assistance suite becomes standard on EX and higher trims. It includes automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also added to EX and higher trims.
Tech
Automatic climate control and an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold become standard on every trim. EX and higher trims add standard remote start, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and rear USB charging ports. Touring adds LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, hands-free tailgate access, and a new nine-speaker audio system.
Structural
A new, longer and wider body and chassis provide more passenger space, including 40.4 inches of rear legroom instead of 38.3 inches. The cargo area is also flatter and more useful.

How the 2018 Honda CR-V compares

The 2018 Honda CR-V is a true carryover, with no major changes from the fully redesigned 2017 model. Its engines, safety features, cabin tech, styling, and structure remain effectively the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2017 Honda CR-V a redesigned model?

Yes. The 2017 Honda CR-V is the first year of the fifth generation and has a new body, chassis, cabin, and broader safety and technology content.

Does every 2017 Honda CR-V have the turbo engine?

No. The 2017 CR-V EX, EX-L, and Touring use a 190-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The LX keeps a 184-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder.

Which 2017 Honda CR-V trims have Honda Sensing?

Honda Sensing is standard on the 2017 CR-V EX, EX-L, and Touring. Its driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and road-departure mitigation; the LX does not receive this suite as standard.

Does the 2017 Honda CR-V have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

Yes, on EX and higher trims. Those versions have a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the LX uses a simpler audio system with Bluetooth and a USB port.

How is the 2017 Honda CR-V different from the 2016 model?

The 2017 CR-V is a full redesign rather than a light update. It has more rear-seat and cargo room, a turbo engine on EX and higher trims, wider use of driver-assistance features, and newer cabin technology; the SE trim is dropped, and EX-L with Navigation is listed separately.
