About the 2017 Audi A4

5th generation A4 sedan / 2nd generation A4 allroad (B9), first U.S. model year for this design.

Audi positions the A4 as a compact luxury car that mixes understated design, a high-quality cabin, strong everyday performance, and easy-to-use technology. The sedan is the core choice for drivers who want comfort and sharp road manners in one package, while the allroad adds more cargo room and light rough-road ability without becoming an SUV. Against rivals, Audi leans heavily on cabin design, digital displays, and all-weather confidence from available quattro.

The Premium trim is the well-equipped starting point, with leather seating, three-zone climate control, a sunroof and smartphone integration. Premium Plus is the everyday sweet spot, adding LED headlights, heated seats, parking sensors and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. Prestige is the technology-focused version, with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, head-up display, navigation and a top-view parking camera, while the ultra sedans emphasize fuel economy.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
The redesigned 2.0-liter turbo engine in the core Premium and Premium Plus trims increases from 220 to 252 horsepower and from 258 to 273 lb-ft of torque. Later in the model year, the front-wheel-drive A4 ultra sedan joins the range with a fuel-saving 190-hp version of the turbo engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Styling
The sedan receives a fully redesigned body and cabin for the B9 generation. The more rugged allroad wagon also returns to the U.S. in this new-generation form.
Safety
Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking become standard across the A4 family through Audi pre sense city.
Tech
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth become standard through the new infotainment interface. Premium Plus also gains standard upgraded audio and a rearview camera, while Prestige adds a digital gauge cluster, head-up display and top-view camera system.
Structural
A lighter structure creates more passenger space, including an increase in rear legroom from 35.2 to 35.7 inches. The redesign also brings new suspension hardware and selectable driving modes across the lineup.

“Great performance. The interoperability with smart phone/devices is not the greatest, but once you get to work out the idiosyncrasies, things should be OK .. Until it acts up again.”
