2015 BMW i3

The most important change for the 2015 BMW i3 is that DC fast charging becomes standard across the lineup. Heated front seats are also standard, but this is otherwise a light equipment update rather than a redesign.

About the 2015 BMW i3

1st generation (I01), second U.S. model year, before the 2017 battery upgrade.

BMW positions the i3 as a premium city EV built from the ground up for electric driving, not a gas car converted to battery power. Its main appeal is quick low-speed response, a very tight turning circle, a lightweight carbon-fiber passenger cell, and a roomy four-seat cabin in a short footprint. Against more ordinary EVs, BMW sells the i3 on distinctive design, upscale materials, sustainability, and a more engaging driving feel, with the Range Extender version adding extra trip flexibility.

The 2015 i3 comes as a pure electric hatchback or as an electric-first Range Extender model with a small gasoline generator for backup power. Both use a 170-hp rear electric motor, a 22-kWh battery, a lightweight carbon-fiber passenger compartment, and a navigation system controlled through BMW’s iDrive interface.

How the 2016 BMW i3 compares

The 2016 BMW i3 is a carryover year with no major changes to the core lineup. A limited 50-unit Shadow Sport Edition was the only notable wrinkle.

Frequently asked questions

What changed on the 2015 BMW i3 compared with the 2014 model?

The 2015 BMW i3 makes DC fast charging and heated front seats standard across the lineup. Its smartphone interface becomes optional, while the motor, battery, structure, styling, and Range Extender hardware carry over.

Does every 2015 BMW i3 have DC fast charging?

Yes. DC fast-charging hardware is standard on both the pure-electric 2015 i3 and the 2015 i3 Range Extender.

Did the 2015 BMW i3 get a larger battery or more power?

No. The 2015 i3 carries over its 22-kWh battery and 170-hp rear electric motor, with no mechanical powertrain changes from 2014.

What is the difference between the 2015 i3 and the 2015 i3 Range Extender?

“This is my first BMW. I have had old VWs, and respect the engineering of German production. But I am frequently surprised about just how the engineering of this BMW is focused on a higher level of driver satisfaction and enjoyment; almost as if the quality and excellence of design of the vehicle is the most important part!”

“We have solar, so our i3 was the best purchase we ever made to save fuel costs as well as maintenance costs. It doesn't seat my entire family, but we have a second vehicle for family trips, and we are almost always riding minus 1-2 people anyway. It's the perfect commuter car, so cute and quiet. I absolutely love it! It's the best vehicle I've ever purchased. New or used.”

“Car very "loosy goosy" to drive on Interstate, especially at higher speeds. Do not like door entry to back seat area.”
