About the 2013 GMC Sierra 2500

Second generation (2007-2014); a late-cycle year following the major 2011 heavy-duty chassis and powertrain update.

GMC positioned the Sierra 2500HD as a heavy-duty pickup combining substantial towing and payload capability with more controlled road manners and a more upscale presentation than a basic work truck. Its core strengths were the fully boxed frame, V8 power, trailer-sway control and direct-feeling steering. Cab, bed and trim variety let the model serve job-site duty, frequent trailer towing or comfortable personal use without moving to the larger 3500HD.

The 2013 Sierra 2500HD ranged from the straightforward Work Truck to the more comfortable SLE, with both built around heavy-duty towing and hauling hardware. SLT added heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control and Bose audio. Crew Cab-only Denali topped the range with heated and cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, a rear-view camera and parking sensors.

What changed, by category

Powertrain
Extended Cab versions of the Work Truck, SLE and SLT added a bi-fuel 6.0-liter V8 that ran on gasoline or compressed natural gas. Gasoline trucks with the six-speed automatic also gained grade braking in normal driving mode, helping the transmission hold speed on descents without requiring Tow/Haul mode.

How the 2014 GMC Sierra 2500 compares

The main change for the 2014 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is the addition of a bi-fuel 6.0-liter V8 that runs on gasoline or compressed natural gas. The Extended Cab also drops from the lineup, but the truck is otherwise largely unchanged before its 2015 redesign.

Frequently asked questions

What changed on the 2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

The biggest change was a bi-fuel gasoline/CNG 6.0-liter V8 for certain Extended Cab trucks. Gasoline models with the six-speed automatic also gained grade braking in normal driving mode; the styling, chassis, safety equipment and cabin technology otherwise carried over.

Which 2013 Sierra 2500HD trims had the bi-fuel gasoline/CNG system?

The bi-fuel system was offered on Extended Cab versions of the Work Truck, SLE and SLT. It was not part of the Crew Cab-only Denali trim.

Was the 2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD redesigned?

No. The 2013 Sierra 2500HD remained part of the second generation and carried over the chassis and exterior design from the prior year.

How does the 2013 Sierra 2500HD compare with the 2012 model?

The 2013 is most different if you need an Extended Cab with the bi-fuel gasoline/CNG system or want normal-mode grade braking on a gasoline truck. Otherwise, it is largely similar to the 2012 model.

Did the 2013 Sierra 2500HD get new safety or cabin technology?

No. There were no significant model-range changes to the Sierra 2500HD's safety equipment or cabin technology for 2013.
