Lincoln resurrected the Aviator nameplate for an all-new midsize crossover SUV in 2020. Based on the Explorer from parent company Ford, the second-generation Aviator is known for its well-appointed cabin, superior ride quality, and powerful turbocharged engine, making it a highly-touted contender in a competitive class of luxury SUVs.
The Lincoln badge is synonymous with luxury, and in many respects, the Aviator reflects those characteristics to a T. The vehicle’s interior and exterior design is stylish and upscale, lauded by both critics and owners for its unique look and feel, even by luxury SUV standards. Comparisons are often made between the Aviator and its larger sibling, the Navigator, in terms of the creature comforts both vehicles provide, but the Aviator manages to combine it all in a smaller, more practical package.
In fact, per research conducted by consumer experience specialist Strategic Vision, the Aviator’s interior quality was the vehicle owners' highest-rated attribute. Specifically, the Aviator has received high marks for its plush, comfortable cabin, which has no shortage of quality touches throughout. Ride quality also stands out, as the Aviator performs well when it comes to dampening bumps in the road and muting road and wind noise. Thirty-way adjustable seats with massaging capability (offered with the Luxury package on the Reserve trim level and above) are also a hit with passengers. Additionally, the Aviator boasts impressive acceleration for a luxury SUV.
Lincoln Aviator Model Lineup
Classified as a midsize luxury crossover SUV, the three-row Lincoln Aviator can seat up to seven passengers. Roughly nine inches longer than the compact Nautilus and ten inches smaller than the full-size Navigator, the Aviator occupies a relative Goldilocks zone within Lincoln’s strong lineup of SUVs and crossovers.
The Aviator is available in five different trim levels: Standard, Reserve, Black Label, Grand Touring, and Grand Touring Black Label. Since its 2020 re-introduction, a 3.0-liter V6 (400 hp, 415 lb-ft of torque) has powered the Standard, Reserve, and Black Label trims, while a 3.0-liter V6 hybrid powertrain (494 hp, 630 lb-ft of torque) propels the Grand Touring and Grand Touring Black Label trims. Buyers have the choice between standard rear-wheel and optional all-wheel drive on non-hybrid trims, while all-wheel drive is standard on the hybrid version.
