Genesis G80

While it doesn’t necessarily possess the brand recognition of its German rivals, the Genesis G80 is every bit the high-end sedan they are. Boasting world-class luxury by way of its smooth and comfortable ride, sumptuous interior and exterior styling, and powerful engine options, the Korean-imported G80 combines all that for a price that beats its European competitors. Owners have been somewhat dismayed by the G80’s underwhelming fuel economy and lack of space for interior storage, but these are relatively minor gripes considering the G80’s prodigious offerings.

Genesis G80 Model Lineup

The G80 is a midsize luxury sedan with room for five. It slots between the compact G70 and the full-size G90 in the automaker’s lineup of sedans. The G80 shares a platform and some components with the Genesis GV80, a midsize SUV. Prior to 2017, the model was known as the Hyundai Genesis.

The G80 comes in a variety of trims, which are named after the size and type of the included engine. From 2017 to 2020, three versions were sold: the base 3.8 with a 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V6, the mid-range 3.3T Sport with a 365-hp turbocharged 3.3-liter V6, and the top-of-the-line 5.0 with a powerful 420-hp 5.0-liter V8. The launch of the second generation in 2021 revised the offerings to two: the entry-level 2.5T with a 300-hp turbo 2.5-liter four-cylinder and the performance-themed 3.5T Sport with a 375-hp turbo 3.5-liter V6. All versions are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission driving either the rear wheels (standard) or all four when equipped with available all-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric variants have yet been released.

When it comes to available features, the G80 doesn’t skimp. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist have long been standard active safety features on the G80, and forward collision mitigation joined that list in 2022. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard tech features on all G80s, while in 2021 a standard 14.5-inch touchscreen – one of the largest in the segment – replaced the prior 8.0-inch unit.

2017 Genesis G80 5.0L

Very nice vehicle. Handles very well and looks good. I was especially impressed with and still love the HUD system. My one complaint is that it sits too low and does not have quite as much headroom as I would like. I have to lower the driver seat quite a bit so that I am looking out the windshield and windows squarely and still cannot adjust the rear view mirror quite a high as needed to see out the rear completely. Fits my wife very well though and she is the primary driver of the car.

If you are considering a Mercedes, BMW, Lexus or other luxury brand, you should also look at the Genesis. More car for less money. Very well thought out vehicle. Genesis thought out every detail very carefully. You can feel quality in each switch or knob. The interior is very comfortable and cozy. The 3.8 six cylinder engine has plenty of power. I took a 12 hour drive to Michigan and thoroughly enjoyed the highway drive, very smooth and comfortable. The Genesis is a very well built car. I have recommended my car to others.

The major concern I have to date is the internal noise could be much quieter than I find it to be . there are times I cannot listen to the radio even with all the Windows up.
