Genesis G70

If you thought BMW had a lock on premium sports sedans, the folks at Genesis would like to have a word with you. Actually, just three digits: G70. The athletic four-door from Hyundai’s luxury division delivers just as many thrills as Munich’s longtime segment leader, the 3 Series. It also rivals that other well-known German, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, when it comes to interior quality and features. On the downside, the G70’s rear-seat size and fuel economy both lag behind the competition.

Genesis may be new to the luxury car scene, but it already knows the formula for success. In the case of a premium compact sports sedan, that means a powerful engine, a nimble, rear-drive chassis, and a luxe, driver-oriented cabin. The G70 delivers on all three.

Under the hood, the G70 sports one of two engines. The 2.0T utilizes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 252 horsepower, while the 3.3T ups the ante with a 3.3-liter turbo V6 churning out 365 ponies. Most examples are backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission with either standard rear-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. Notably, a six-speed manual was also available through the 2021 model year and paired exclusively with rear-wheel drive.

For the full sports sedan experience, buyers should opt for the 3.3T with the optional Sport package. Not only can its punchy turbo V6 launch the car to 60 mph in under five seconds, but it also boasts upgraded brakes, a limited-slip rear differential, and an adaptive sport suspension, making it a willing partner for a morning of canyon carving or even a day at the track.

Inside the cabin, the G70’s game is strong – especially 2022 and later years, which benefit from a significant model refresh. Among the upgrades is a larger and more responsive 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, replacing an 8-inch unit that looked as if it had been borrowed from the Hyundai parts shelf (and was).

All G70 versions come equipped with standard power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot warning. Additional goodies – such as LED headlights, parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, and navigation – are available on models equipped with the pricier Elite or Prestige option packages.

Genesis G70 Model Lineup

The G70 is a premium compact sports sedan that seats five. It’s the smallest sedan in the South Korean automaker’s lineup, measuring about a foot shorter than their next larger model, the midsize G80. The G70 shares a platform with the Kia Stinger, made by Genesis’ sister company.

Genesis offers the G70 in two primary trims: 2.0T and 3.3T, which correspond to engine sizes. They can be combined with a range of option packages: the base-level Standard, the midtier Elite, the well-equipped Prestige, and the performance-oriented Sport. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available on most trims. No hybrid or electric versions have been offered.

I love the car, I just wish it were a little roomier. Not enough clearance for passengers in the back seat.

I was looking for a car to replace my 2010 Altima coupe which is no longer available. The Genesis 70 provided the looks, styling, power and safety features I have been looking for in a vehicle for over two years. The fact that it was the 2019 car of the year didn't hurt.

While there are some compromises with the G70 - smaller trunk space, tight back seat, smaller sized gas tank, and so-so fuel economy - the vehicle is a blast to drive and a real head-turner. It is by far my favorite vehicle I have ever driven and plan on keeping it for a long time. Genesis knocked it out of the park on this project.
