An all-new model for 2022, the Ford Maverick offers excellent fuel economy and surprising utility at an affordable price. As one of just a few compact trucks on the market, it’s a great choice for anyone who wants the practicality of an open-bed pickup in a bite-sized package.

One of the Maverick’s most distinctive features is its standard hybrid powertrain. Using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, it delivers up to 191 horsepower (combined) to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It’s not the most refined performer but does achieve a class-leading 37 mpg in mixed driving, according to the EPA.

Those needing more oomph can opt for a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which makes 250 horsepower. Backed by a traditional 8-speed automatic, the turbo four offers a noticeable boost in acceleration and can also be fitted with all-wheel drive. Additionally, it increases the Maverick’s towing capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 lbs. (when paired with an optional towing package).

The Maverick is appropriately utilitarian inside the cabin, especially in base XL trim, which doesn’t even come with cruise control. Most buyers will want to step up at least to the XLT, which adds creature comforts such as power side mirrors and a power-locking tailgate. Opting for the top-level Lariat trim nets you the plushest accommodations and also unlocks notable options such as adaptive cruise control, heated seats, and a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo.

Those who plan to venture off the beaten path should look for examples equipped with the FX4 Off-Road package, which adds skid plates, hill-descent control, tow hooks, and all-terrain tires.

Ford Maverick Model Lineup

The Maverick is a compact pickup truck with four doors, a 4.5-foot bed, and a 1,500-pound payload capacity. It’s the smallest truck in Ford’s lineup, which includes the midsize Ranger and the full-size F-150. The Maverick shares a platform and some mechanical components with the Ford Escape, a compact SUV.

Ford offers the Maverick in three trim levels: the bare-bones XL, the midtier XLT, and the well-equipped Lariat. It comes standard with a hybrid powertrain and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available when paired with an optional turbocharged gasoline engine.
