Ford F-150

After many decades as the top-selling vehicle in the U.S., the Ford F-150 has clearly established itself as an American icon. It’s easy to see why. Combining durability, functionality, and comfort, Ford’s full-size pickup caters to a wide range of needs, from daily driving to heavy-duty towing. Owners appreciate its vast powertrain options, spacious cabin, and advanced technology and safety features, which debuted with the model’s 13th generation in 2015. On the downside, some note fuel efficiency and ride quality as areas for improvement. Overall, though, the F-150's ability to adapt to changing market demands while maintaining its core strengths has made it a consistent favorite among truck enthusiasts.

Ford F-150 Model Lineup

The Ford F-150 is a full-size pickup truck that is available in three cab styles, including a regular cab, an extended cab (called SuperCab), and, roomiest of all, a crew cab (called SuperCrew), with seating for up to six passengers. Part of Ford's F-Series lineup, it’s closely related to the heavy-duty F-250 and F-350 models, which offer enhanced capabilities. Properly equipped, the F-150 can tow up to 14,000 pounds.

Ford builds the F-150 in several trims, including the base XL, the mid-level XLT, and the more upscale Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims. The off-road-oriented Raptor variant joined the lineup in 2010. Ford also offers an all-electric version, the F-150 Lightning, which is reviewed separately.

The F-150 is available with a variety of powertrains. The base 3.3-liter V6 engine, first offered in 2018, generates 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, suitable for light-duty tasks. A 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, available on many trims, ups the ante to 325 hp and 400 lb-ft, while a larger 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 increases that to 375 hp and 470 lb-ft for even stronger performance. Traditionalists can opt for Ford’s classic 5.0-liter V8, which offers about 390 hp and 400 lb-ft, while diesel fans can choose a 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 turbodiesel, introduced in 2018, that delivers 250 hp and 440 lb-ft, making it ideal for efficient towing. The most recent offering, which debuted in 2021, is a hybrid unit that combines the EcoBoost V6 with an electric motor for 430 hp and 570 lb-ft, providing abundant thrust and above-average fuel economy.

Ford has made numerous updates to the F-150’s tech and safety offerings in recent years. In 2016, the automaker introduced its SYNC 3 infotainment system, bringing significant improvements in terms of usability and responsiveness and adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. In 2021, an optional 12-inch touchscreen became available, offering improved graphics along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. In terms of advanced safety tech, the F-150's 2015 redesign introduced several important features, including available blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision mitigation. These features were largely optional until 2021, when many became standard on the XLT and higher trims.

We recommend that used F-150 shoppers consider 2015 and later models for their improved chassis, features, and safety. The XLT and Lariat trims offer a balance of features and affordability, with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 or 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines providing a good mix of power and efficiency. If budget allows, a 2021 or later F-150 with the hybrid 3.5-liter PowerBoost V6 is also an excellent choice for its strong fuel economy, advanced tech, and impressive towing capabilities.

I would like to see dual climate control as standard on the F-150 XLT. So far, my new F-150 is everything I expected it to be!

The gas mileage is not as stated and this is a great disappointment, was told that the gas mileage listed us done at sea level, maybe they should do gas mileage for the altitude where the vehicle is being sold, so you know what to really expect.

My f150 doesn't have a reversing camera and I feel that this safety item should be standard on this type of vehicle

When entering vehicle on driver's side would be much better to have a hand hold to assist in getting in vehicle, very awkward without hand hold.
