Ford Explorer

After hitting the streets in 1991, the Explorer became one of the first models to tap into American buyers’ seemingly insatiable thirst for SUVs. Ford has worked hard to keep its popular midsizer up-to-date through the decades by giving it increased levels of comfort, power, and efficiency. These days, fans of the Explorer rave about its cushy ride, user-friendly tech, and impressive towing capabilities. However, it's not all smooth sailing as critics point out its lackluster fuel economy and also note some reliability concerns in older models. Nevertheless, the Explorer remains a go-to choice for many, delivering a winning combination of practicality, performance, and utility that keeps buyers coming back.

Ford Explorer Model Lineup

The Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with seating for up to seven passengers. It sits between the smaller Ford Escape and the larger Ford Expedition in terms of size and price, and it shares a platform and some components with the more upscale Lincoln Aviator, which is built by Ford’s luxury arm. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,600 pounds.

Ford offers the Explorer in various trims, including the base, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum. The base trim comes relatively well equipped, while the XLT adds upgraded interior materials and some additional convenience features. The Limited further enhances the experience with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and additional tech. The Sport focuses on performance with a more powerful engine and a sport-tuned suspension, while the Platinum offers the highest levels of luxury and advanced safety features.

In terms of powertrains, the Ford Explorer has seen several updates over the past decade. Most recently, the 2020 model year introduced three engine options: a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower (available on the base, XLT, and Limited trims), a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine generating 365 hp (Sport and Platinum trims), and a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.3-liter V6 engine combined with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 318 hp (Limited Hybrid trim). All engines are paired with an automatic transmission that was upgraded from six to 10 speeds in 2020. That’s also the year rear-wheel drive replaced front-wheel drive as the standard drivetrain. All-wheel drive is optional.

In 2016, Ford upgraded the Explorer’s infotainment to its SYNC 3 system, offering a more intuitive interface, faster response times, and better smartphone integration. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration followed in 2017. In 2020, Ford added even more advanced features, such as a larger optional 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Available advanced safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking, with the automaker’s Co-Pilot360 suite becoming standard in 2020.

We recommend that used car shoppers target Explorer examples from 2017 or later, which offer improved tech and safety features. The XLT and Limited trims provide a comfortable balance of features and affordability, while the Sport and Platinum trims cater to those seeking a more performance-oriented or luxurious experience. If fuel economy is a priority, consider the Limited Hybrid trim, which boasts improved efficiency without sacrificing power.
