Alfa Romeo Stelvio

With so many choices among small luxury crossovers, the various options can start to blend together. But the Alfa Romeo Stelvio stands out. With racy Italian styling, gobs of available power, and surprisingly athletic handling, it puts the “sport” in SUV. Owners of the premium two-row crossover delight in its gutsy engines – which include an available 505-horsepower twin-turbo V6 – as well as its upscale looks and luxe cabin. On the downside, utility is somewhat lacking in the Stelvio. Back-seat legroom and cargo space both lag behind rivals. Owners also rate its built-in navigation system as subpar.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Model Lineup

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a compact luxury crossover SUV with room for five. It’s the larger of two sport-ute options from the Italian automaker, measuring about six inches longer than the subcompact Tonale, which is new for 2023. The Stelvio shares a platform and some components with its sedan sibling, the Giulia.

The Stelvio comes in a few different trims, including the base version (renamed Sprint in 2021), the mid-tier Ti, the performance-oriented Ti Sport (renamed Veloce in 2022), the luxury-themed Ti Lusso, and the range-topping Quadrifoglio, which offers the highest levels of performance and amenities. All come well equipped with premium features, including leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. In 2022, Alfa Romeo also made adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning standard across all trims; prior to that, they were optional.

Most Stelvio examples employ a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine making 280 horsepower. Backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission, it drives either the rear wheels (standard) or all four via optional all-wheel drive. Stepping up to the top-tier Quadrifoglio adds some serious sizzle under the hood in the form of a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 505 horses. The V6 also utilizes an eight-speed automatic and comes standard with an all-wheel drive system that’s tuned to enhance on-road handling, plus upgraded brakes and other performance add-ons. No hybrid or electric versions have been offered.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

The drive is smooth and powerful. It handles really well, has incredible pick-up and stops on a dime. It's extremely comfortable to drive, and while it's not a "pimped out" interior, it is simple and impeccable. And, when driving in Dynamic mode, it's a beast! Enjoy.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Aside from some quirks and odd decisions the car has excellent dynamics and practicality. The trade offs for a better interior, performance or features were not worth other the cost.

Excellent engineering, an exterior style that is definitely different from most crossover vehicles. The name and performance definitely make a statement.
