Volvo XC40 Recharge

Launched in 2021, the XC40 Recharge is Volvo’s first all-electric vehicle. In fact, the XC40 Recharge represents a notable shift for the Swedish automaker, which has pledged its intention to launch one new EV every year with the goal of making half its lineup fully electric by 2025. Friendliness to the environment aside, the XC40 Recharge also earns high marks from owners for its exceptional power (over 400 horsepower), all-wheel drive capabilities, and strong list of standard features. Conversely, the XC40 Recharge’s sticker price is a little steep, while its all-electric range is a bit limited compared to rivals.

Volvo XC40 Recharge Model Lineup

The XC40 Recharge is an all-electric variant of Volvo’s subcompact luxury SUV, the XC40. With room for five passengers, it’s the smallest all-electric vehicle in Volvo’s lineup, which also includes a “coupe-like” version of the model called the C40 Recharge (reviewed separately).

After launching under a single trim for the 2021 model year, the XC40 Recharge expanded to three trims in 2022: the entry-level base, the mid-range Plus, and the top-tier Ultimate. All versions are well-equipped with standard features, including leather upholstery, four USB-C ports, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, forward collision mitigation, and, as of 2022, a surround-view camera (which was previously optional). Adaptive cruise control is optional. The XC40 debuted with Android Auto in 2021, and it gained Apple CarPlay through an over-the-air update for 2022.

The XC40 is motivated by a 78-kWh battery pack that sends power to a pair of electric motors that produce a maximum of 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is standard. When it comes to range, the XC40 Recharge achieves an EPA-estimated 223 miles. Replenishing the battery pack takes roughly eight hours when plugged into a 240-volt at-home charger. When connected to a DC fast charger, it can go from 0% to 80% in approximately 40 minutes.
