Volvo V90

Volvo has a long history of building premium wagons, and the V90 continues in that tradition – but with a twist. It’s still safe and practical like Volvo wagons of old, but it no longer looks like a box on wheels. Instead, it’s drop-dead gorgeous inside and out. Owners of the V90 give it high marks not only for styling but also for its class-leading levels of standard safety tech and its supremely comfortable seats. On the downside, some find its infotainment interface a bit cumbersome to use, while others wish for better fuel economy from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Volvo V90 Model Lineup

The V90 is a midsize luxury wagon with room for up to five people. It’s the larger of two wagons in Volvo’s lineup, measuring about seven inches longer than the compact V60. The V90 shares a platform and many components with the similarly sized S90, the Swedish automaker’s flagship sedan.

Volvo’s premium wagon is available in two different versions: the regular V90 (sold through 2021) and the V90 Cross Country, which sports additional ride height and unpainted body cladding to give it more of an outdoorsy look. Regular V90s are further differentiated between the sporty R-Design and the more luxurious Inscription trims. All versions offer a generous level of standard equipment, including keyless entry and ignition, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, and a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, navigation, and a rearview camera. Standard safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision mitigation. Notable options include an adaptive air suspension, a surround-view camera, ventilated and massaging front seats, and a premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

Motivating the V90 is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in one of three versions. The entry-level T5 is a turbocharged unit producing 250 horsepower and powering the front wheels – except in Cross Country models, where it boasts standard all-wheel drive. The more powerful T6 adds supercharging to increase output to 316 ponies, and it drives all four wheels. In 2022, Volvo eliminated the T5 offering and revamped the T6, swapping its engine-driven supercharger for a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. With 295 hp, this new engine, dubbed B6, is slightly down on power compared to the T6 but offers a small improvement in fuel economy, gaining 1 mpg (from 24 to 25) in mixed driving, according to the EPA. All V90s come equipped with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Volvo V90 has great features that make driving enjoyable and luxurious. Specifically, the semi-autonomous features take the drudgery out of driving in heavy commuter traffic that is so prevalent in my local area. The integration of voice controls as well as smartphone connectivity make the driving experience enjoyable without being a distraction. The small details such as the configurable ambient mood lighting add to the sense of tranquility while driving. In all, it's a pleasure to drive this vehicle.

Great car but get the T8 - it needs the electric motor otherwise underpowered

Be prepared for a learning curve. This model Volvo is very sensitive. Now that we have owned it for 6 months we love it, actually we learned to love it. It is not for us, we did not realize just how sportscar-minded the new Volvo models are. We would be crazy about it if only the headrests were adjustable! They are fixed and so uncomfortable to the point of we may sell it for that reason alone. The headrest placement is THAT bad.

The V90 Cross Country is a more comfortable and room car that any of the competitors. Not as harsh riding as the cross overs or SUV

It is just the most comfortable for getting in & out. Easy to carry stuff in the back. Enough leg room. Very quiet and easy to drive but you have to learn how it thinks.

This is my 6th Volvo. I recommend this brand to anyone who expresses any interest. Volvo is unpretentious but performs as well if not better than fancy brands such as Lexus, Audi, BMW. The seats are the more comfortable than any car. The new model style is updated and the technology is light years better than my 2015.
