Volvo S60

Striking a balance between performance and a pampered ride, the S60 is an attractive choice for buyers seeking an entry-level luxury sedan. Volvo is known for its sterling safety reputation, and the S60 builds upon it by delivering a plush interior packed with a host of advanced features, such as adaptive cruise control, which have been available on the premium Swedish four-door for more than a decade. While a lofty sticker price and a clunky infotainment system may be weak spots for the S60, it remains a highly desirable choice in the segment.

Volvo S60 Model Lineup

Now in its third generation, the S60 is a compact luxury sedan that seats up to five. It’s the smallest sedan in Volvo’s lineup, measuring about a foot shorter than the midsize S90. An extended-wheelbase version called the S60 Inscription was available for the 2016-2018 model years and adds three inches of rear-seat legroom. The model’s environmentally-conscious sibling, the S60 Plug-in Hybrid (also known as the Recharge or the T8), is reviewed separately.

Volvo has offered the S60 in numerous trims over the years. Since 2019, they include the entry-level Momentum, the sporty R-Design, and luxe-leaning Inscription. Prior to that, Volvo distinguished the S60’s trims primarily based on the included engine – either the base T5 or the more powerful and, typically, better-equipped T6. S60s with the T5 powertrain utilize turbocharged four- or five-cylinder engines ranging from 240 to 250 horsepower, while those with the T6 feature either a turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder or an inline-six and churn out between 300 and 316 ponies. In 2022, Volvo discontinued the T5 mill in favor of a new mild-hybrid version called the B5, which produces 247 hp. Most versions are offered in either front- or all-wheel drive and pair with a six- or eight-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of features, the S60 has long been well-equipped. Adaptive cruise control has been optional since 2011, and forward collision mitigation and blind-spot warning were also added as options for the 2012 model year before being elevated to standard equipment in 2017 and 2021, respectively. A 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration replaced a 7.0-inch unit in 2019, while lane-keeping assist arrived as a standard safety feature that same year.

I wish this vehicle had a spare tire or at least a place in the trunk to put a spare tire.
