Volkswagen Tiguan

The Tiguan has been one of Volkswagen’s top-selling models ever since its 2009 debut. And it’s no surprise. Now in its second generation, the model combines the practicality of a small SUV with some of VW’s typically excellent qualities, including sharp styling, a refined ride, and an upscale interior. Letdowns are few but include lackluster fuel economy for the segment as well as a cramped third row.

Volkswagen Tiguan Model Lineup

The Tiguan is a compact crossover SUV that seats five in its standard configuration or up to seven with the available third row. It slots between the subcompact Taos and the midsize Atlas in Volkswagen’s sport-ute lineup. The Tiguan shares a platform and some components with the Audi Q3, made by VW’s sister company.

Volkswagen offers the Tiguan in a wide variety of trims, including the base-level S, the midtier SE and SEL, the sporty R-Line, and the luxurious SEL Premium. All trims since 2017 include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Forward collision mitigation and blind-spot warning became standard on all trims in 2020.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making between 184 and 200 horsepower, depending on the model year. It’s typically mated to an automatic transmission, though a manual gearbox was offered through 2014. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option on most trims. No hybrid or electric versions have yet been released.

2015 Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line (2.0TSI) AWD

I am dissatisfied with the suspension of the Tiguan R Line. I feel that the ride is not smooth, yet bumpy - like I'm driving my father's 1988 pick-up truck. The fuel economy is unsatisfactory as well. Currently I drive to work only twice a week yet I am refueling more frequently than with my previous vehicle. The price tag for the Tiguan R Line 4 Motion suggests an overall better ownership experience. I would have looked at the Audi A5 prior to making my decision had I known that the Tiguan R Line was this disappointing.

This vehicle provides a great drive, wish it had more trunk space and also automatic headlights.
