Volkswagen Taos

An all-new entry-level model from Volkswagen in 2022, the Taos has quickly established itself as one of the top subcompact crossover SUVs on the market. An all-new entry-level model from Volkswagen in 2022, the Taos has quickly established itself as one of the top subcompact crossover SUVs on the market. It may not be the most rugged or athletic model in the segment, but few can touch this mighty little sport-ute’s fuel economy and surprisingly roomy interior.

The Volkswagen Taos is one of the most well-rounded vehicles in its class, offering a generous amount of passenger and cargo space relative to its modest size. Large door openings provide lots of room for ingress and egress, while the spacious back seat makes the Taos feel as if it’s a size larger than it actually is. In fact, the 37.9 inches of rear legroom is less than an inch shy of that offered by the larger Tiguan. Moreover, the 28 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and 66 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded flat provide plenty of room for small families planning a road trip or long weekend getaway. While not especially cushy or luxurious, the sporty-looking seats inside the Taos are still plenty comfortable, giving it an interior that challenges for best-in-class.

Fuel economy is another area where the Taos shines brightly. In mixed driving, all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive models earn EPA ratings of 28 mpg and 31 mpg, respectively; however, a front-drive Taos returned an impressive 40 mpg (combined) during Car and Driver testing. These figures rival the best that the subcompact SUV segment has to offer.

Volkswagen Taos Model Lineup

With seating for five, the Taos is a stylish yet affordable entrant into the subcompact SUV segment, a class that has become increasingly more competitive in recent years. Though the Taos borrows much of its design and spirit from the Volkswagen Tiguan, it is more than 10 inches shorter than its sibling, making it the smallest SUV in the German automaker’s lineup.

The Taos is available in three primary trims: the base S, the mid-range SE, and the top-of-the-line SEL. Each comes with a turbo 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine. The S and SE offer standard front-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (denoted by 4Motion badging) is available on the SEL, which employs a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. No hybrid or electric versions are available at this time.
