Volkswagen Jetta GLI

The GLI is to the Jetta as the GTI is to the Golf. In other words, it’s the sporty one. And like the GTI, the GLI utilizes a peppier engine, bigger wheels, tires, and brakes, and other performance upgrades to transform its competent but humble base model into something that's genuinely fun to drive. The main difference is that the GLI also boasts a trunk. Owners of the Jetta GLI give it high marks for its punchy turbo four-cylinder engine (shared with the GTI) as well as its sure-footed agility on the tarmac. On the downside, some find its interior materials a bit on the cheap side. In addition, its seats draw some criticism for a lack of adjustability and long-haul comfort.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI Model Lineup

The Jetta GLI is a sportier variant of Volkswagen’s popular compact sedan, the Jetta. For many years, the GLI was designated as a trim level of the regular Jetta, but in 2019, VW made it its own distinct model. The five-seater is the only performance-themed sedan in VW’s lineup, and it shares a platform and some components with the Golf GTI, a sporty compact hatchback.

Motivating the Jetta GLI is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (borrowed from the GTI), which makes 228 horsepower. It can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In either case, power routes to the front wheels (only). All-wheel drive is not available, nor is an electric or hybrid variant.

Volkswagen offers the Jetta GLI in two main trims: the base-level S (which was discontinued in 2022) and the well-equipped Autobahn. A 35th Anniversary Edition with unique trim details and special badging was also offered for the 2019 model year. Standard equipment on the GLI includes LED headlights, a limited-slip differential, dual-zone automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, and a 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring are also included. Stepping up to the Autobahn trim adds a panoramic sunroof, a digital instrument panel, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a premium Beats Audio sound system, and an upgraded 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. In 2021, VW also added a wireless device charger and an adaptive suspension (called Dynamic Chassis Control, or DCC) to the Autobahn trim, and in 2022, it gained adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

The Jetta GLI has nearly the same performance as a Golf GTI with a lower price point plus you can still get a manual transmission with the GLI. It handles well and with a adequate performance engine at a price less than $30k.

The car puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Plenty of performance, but also plenty of comfort and fuel economy.
