Volkswagen Atlas

With the Atlas, Volkswagen gives family car buyers exactly what they want: a spacious and comfortable three-row crossover with a premium feel – but without a premium price. It may not be the most exciting SUV out there, but in a crowded field of people haulers, the Atlas stands out for getting a lot of the little things right.

When the Volkswagen Touareg was discontinued for 2018, the all-new Atlas took over its spot as the German automaker’s flagship SUV. Not only is its name easier to spell, but the Atlas is also a better fit with most U.S. buyers, finally giving VW a model with that all-important third row.

Atlas shoppers have the choice of two powerplants: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 235 horsepower and a 3.6-liter V6 that bumps output to 276 hp. Mated to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, the four-pot returns an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in mixed driving with front-wheel drive. Opting for all-wheel drive drops that by a single digit. Meanwhile, V6-equipped models earn 20 or 19 mpg, respectively, with front- or all-wheel drive.

Neither engine delivers much in the way of driving excitement, however. In fact, according to surveys by consumer research specialist Strategic Vision, Atlas owners rate acceleration among the big VW’s worst attributes.

On the other hand, owners give the Atlas especially high marks for roominess and ride comfort. And despite the larger footprint and compliant suspension, VW engineers have thankfully managed to keep the marque’s trademark nimble handling intact. The Atlas corners capably.

All versions of the three-row sport-ute come reasonably well-equipped. Even base models include dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims, along with a variety of options packages, unlock additional niceties, such as heated and powered front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate.

Since 2019, all Atlases have come equipped with forward collision mitigation and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. To get even more advanced safety tech, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, buyers must upgrade at least to the midlevel SE trim with the Technology package.

Volkswagen Atlas Model Lineup

The Atlas is a midsize three-row crossover SUV that seats six or seven, depending on the configuration. It’s the largest SUV in Volkswagen’s lineup, some 14 inches longer than the next smaller model, the compact Tiguan. The Atlas is also available in a sleek coupe-like body style, known as the Atlas Cross Sport, which seats five.

Volkswagen offers the Atlas in a variety of trims, ranging from the base S to the range-topping SEL Premium. Lower trims are equipped with a standard four-cylinder gasoline engine and front-wheel drive. Higher trims are upgraded with V6 power and all-wheel drive, which VW calls 4Motion. No hybrid or electric versions have yet been offered.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas AWD

Fuel consumption is on the higher side, very roomy, technology wise not well up to speed compared to the similar vehicles on the same league, very comfortable rides, sluggish pick up speeds.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas AWD

I have mixed feelings - the acceleration is poor and the car is a smidge too big to comfortably park a lot of places, but I do like the styling and the overall comfort and usability.

It's amazing! Lane assist, braking assist, high beam assist, plus a ton of other cool features! The thing almost drives itself, plus has a ton of room inside. We love it!
