Toyota Yaris

While it probably won’t win any beauty pageants or make your friends jealous, the Toyota Yaris is an ideal vehicle for individuals seeking dependable A-to-B transportation on a budget. Discontinued after the 2020 model year, the Yaris lacks many driver-assist and advanced safety features, but it shines brightly when it comes to fuel economy, handling, and maneuverability. Indeed, the Yaris may not offer much chest-thumping cache, though prospective owners aren’t likely to be seeking clout.

Toyota Yaris Model Lineup

The Yaris is available as a subcompact sedan or a two- or four-door hatchback with seating for up to five people. All Yaris versions slot below the Corolla as the smallest vehicles in Toyota’s lineup. Originally offered only as a hatchback, the Yaris added a sedan version, known as the Yaris iA, in 2017. The Yaris sedan (and in 2020 the hatchback, too) is based on the Mazda 2, despite sporting the Toyota badge.

Toyota sold the Yaris in three trims: the base L, the mid-tier LE, and the high-end XLE, which replaced the sporty, four-door-only SE trim in 2019. The Yaris iA sedan was offered in just a single trim during the 2017 and 2018 model years before dropping the “iA” designation in 2019. The Yaris lacks many advanced safety features, though lane-departure warning and forward collision warning did become standard across all trims for 2017. A standard 7.0-inch touchscreen (replacing a 6.1-inch display) arrived for 2019, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto followed as standard features for 2020.

A 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine (106 hp, 103 lb-ft) is the only engine option available on the Yaris. Front-wheel driven, the Yaris’ powertrain was backed by a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic through the 2018 model year. In 2019, a six-speed manual transmission became standard, while a six-speed automatic was also offered (and came standard on the sedan’s XLE trim and the 2020 Yaris hatchback). No hybrid or electric variants were made.

For being a basic economical car with just standard equipment. The audio system is excellent and was a pleasant surprise. Probably the best part of owning the car with the exception of the gas mileage.

Get a car that fits all your needs. I love the Yaris and has the basic things that I need. The drive is silent and smooth and the features fit my needs. Test it out and see if it fits your needs.

You should always buy a Toyota if given the chance. The radio system could be better, but the vehicle is great.
