Toyota Tundra Hybrid

With the introduction of its revamped third-generation Tundra pickup in 2022, Toyota added a hybrid-powered version for the first time in the truck’s long history. That makes the Tundra Hybrid just the second full-size truck available with a hybrid powertrain, following the Ford F-150 Hybrid, which debuted in 2021. Owners of the Tundra Hybrid rate it highly for its refined and powerful hybrid V6 engine, its roomy and upscale interior, and its smooth-riding suspension, which features new-for-2022 coil springs at the rear. On the downside, some find the Tundra Hybrid’s real-world fuel economy something of a letdown. It’s not significantly better than the standard version yet costs thousands more.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid Model Lineup

The Tundra Hybrid is a hybrid-powered version of Toyota’s full-size pickup, the Tundra. It’s available only in a crew cab configuration (called CrewMax) that seats up to five people and comes with either a 5.5- or a 6.5-foot bed. The Tundra Hybrid is the only hybrid-powered truck in the Japanese automaker’s lineup, and it shares a platform and some components with the Sequoia, a full-size SUV. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 11,450 pounds.

Under the hood, the Tundra Hybrid features a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 48-horsepower electric motor and a small battery pack (housed under the rear seats). Together, they produce 437 hp and 583 pound-feet of torque, which is routed via a 10-speed automatic transmission either to the rear wheels (RWD) or to all four when equipped with optional four-wheel drive (4WD). With the hybrid powertrain, the Tundra earns an EPA fuel economy rating of 22 mpg in mixed driving for RWD examples or 20 mpg for those with 4WD.

Toyota offers the Tundra Hybrid in five trims: the well-equipped Limited, the upscale Platinum, the ranch-themed 1794 Edition (which is equipped similarly to the Platinum), the off-road-ready TRD Pro, and the range-topping Capstone. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, faux leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a digital instrument panel, and a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Also standard is a suite of active safety tech that includes forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Platinum and 1794 Edition trims add a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated rear seats, a wireless device charger, and a surround-view camera (among other features). The TRD Pro comes with all-terrain wheels and tires, skid plates, off-road shock absorbers, a locking rear differential, and crawl control. The top-tier Capstone trim features 22-inch wheels, unique colors, and more upscale interior appointments.
