Toyota Tundra

Toyota entered the full-size pickup market in 2000 with the Tundra. Despite some initial skepticism about a Japanese automaker breaking into such a distinctly American segment, the Tundra has since enjoyed decades of success thanks to its compelling combination of utility, comfort, and reliability. Owners give the Tundra high marks for its roomy cabin (especially in CrewMax guise), powerful engines, and strong resale values. On the downside, some find its real-world fuel economy disappointing. Additionally, the rival trucks from Ford, Chevrolet, and Ram offer a wider range of powertrains (including diesel) with higher towing and payload capacities.

Toyota Tundra Model Lineup

The Tundra is a full-size pickup that seats up to six people, depending on the configuration. It’s Toyota’s largest truck, measuring about 20 inches longer than the midsize Tacoma. The Tundra is available in three cab sizes: a two-door regular cab (discontinued in 2018), a four-door extended cab (called Double Cab), and, roomiest of all, a four-door crew cab (called CrewMax). Cargo bed sizes include a 5.5-foot short bed, a 6.5-foot standard bed, and an 8-foot long bed. Properly equipped, the Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds.

Under the hood, the Tundra offers a range of engine options, including a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque (discontinued in 2015), a 4.6-liter V8 with 310 hp and 327 lb-ft (discontinued in 2020), and a 5.7-liter V8 with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft (discontinued in 2022). With the debut of the third-generation Tundra in 2022, Toyota introduced a new 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 with 389 hp and 479 lb-ft in its standard form. An optional hybrid version of that engine, available on upper-level trims, increases output to 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. All Tundras come with an automatic transmission, which was upgraded from a six- to a ten-speed unit in 2022. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive optional on most versions.

Toyota builds the Tundra in six main trims: the base SR, the slightly upgraded SR5, the well-equipped Limited, the luxurious Platinum, the ranch-themed 1794 Edition (which is equipped similarly to the Platinum), and the off-road-oriented TRD Pro. With the debut of the third-gen Tundra in 2022, the automaker added a range-topping seventh version, the Capstone. Two special editions are also available: the outdoorsy Trail Edition and the Nightshade, which features blacked-out trim, dark-finished alloy wheels, and black leather upholstery. Toyota’s suite of standard active safety features and driving aids, which includes forward collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control, became standard on the Tundra in 2018. In 2020, it also gained a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard equipment.

2014 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 2WD (8-Cyl)

3.0

I am very impressed with this vehicle. I do think that some refinement with respect to the display controls would be helpful. Saftey of use seems to override the functionality. Having more on one screen like the Prius would have been nice. It is disappointing that the Encore App is not available for my vehicle. Media storage for music files would be appreciated. A better blue tooth microphone or a microphone location closer to forward of the driver would pick up more voice and less noise. I have to look up to speak into it loud enough to talk over the road noise while on the highway.

2014 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 4WD (8-Cyl)

The blind spot warning button should be moved away from the rear window control. It should be harder to press to deactivate. There should be a dashboard indicator showing that it is off. The tailgate should remote lock/unlock and drop. I love the truck!

2014 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 4WD (8-Cyl)

I buy Toyota because they last and have few mechanical issues.

2014 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 2WD (8-Cyl)

I do not like the feature on the new Tundra. It does not have the same pick-up off the line as the old one and there is no storage space anywhere in the cab. The volume switch was moved down to an unfavorable position.
