Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Thanks to its roomy cabin, comfy ride, and famed reliability reputation, the RAV4 is already a strong contender in the compact crossover class, and Toyota makes it even better with the addition of a hybrid powertrain, which delivers not just improved fuel economy but also faster acceleration. Despite the extra oomph, the RAV4 Hybrid isn’t the sportiest SUV in the segment. But with a generous set of standard features even on base models, it delivers value and utility that few competitors can match.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Model Lineup

The RAV4 Hybrid is a compact crossover SUV with room for five. It’s the smallest hybrid SUV offered by Toyota, measuring about half a foot shorter than the next larger model, the midsize Venza. Notably, though, the RAV4 Hybrid matches or exceeds most of the Venza’s interior dimensions thanks to its boxier shape.

Toyota offers the RAV4 Hybrid in a variety of trims, including the entry-level LE, the mid-range XLE and XLE Premium, the sport-oriented SE and XSE, and the top-tier Limited. Since 2017, all trim levels have come with a suite of active safety features that includes adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation. Apple CarPlay integration has been standard since 2019 with Android Auto joining in 2020.

All RAV4 Hybrids employ a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors (one at each axle). Earlier models (through 2018) make a combined 194 horsepower, while later versions (2019 and after) get a small bump to 219 ponies. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A plug-in hybrid variant, known as the RAV4 Prime, debuted for the 2021 model year and is reviewed separately.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD

Very comfortable ride even at higher speeds. Really great gas mileage - usually over 400 miles per tankful of gas. Loads of legroom front and rear. We are very happy with both of our new RAV4s.

Mostly satisfied with this car. Fun to drive. Many new features to keep me interested. Changing from electric to gas mode could be smoother.

Smooth ride, well engineered, good gas mileage, comfortable. Lift hatch is a nuisance.
