Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid has been dubbed the “Camry of SUVs,” a nod to its immense popularity among car buyers. Lauded for its ride comfort, impressive list of standard features, and tremendous fuel economy (with EPA ratings as high as 36 mpg in mixed driving), the Highlander Hybrid is certainly well-rounded. However, its cramped third row and underwhelming towing capability may be enough to dissuade some prospective buyers from choosing this otherwise standout hybrid people mover.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid Model Lineup

The Highlander Hybrid is a hybrid variant of Toyota's midsize crossover SUV, the Highlander. Offering three rows of seats and room for seven or eight passengers (depending on the configuration), it slots between the midsize 4Runner and the full-size Sequoia in Toyota's lineup of SUVs.

The Highlander Hybrid comes in a variety of trims, including the entry-level LE, the mid-tier XLE, the luxury-leaning Limited, and the range-topping Platinum (known as Limited Platinum prior to 2020). The Bronze Edition was added in 2022 and slots between the XLE and the Limited in the hierarchy. Advanced safety features including forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control have been standard on all Highlander Hybrid trims since 2017, while blind-spot warning was added in 2022 (and was previously optional). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were added as standard features for 2020.

Highlander Hybrid models from 2019 and earlier utilize a 3.5-liter V6 paired with three electric motors to power all four wheels, a setup that produces between 280 and 306 horsepower, depending on the model year, and returns an EPA-estimated 28-29 mpg in mixed driving. In 2020, Toyota swapped the V6 for a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The revised powertrain offers slightly less output (243 hp) but an improvement in its EPA fuel economy rating to 35-36 mpg (combined). It also offers the choice of front- or all-wheel drive. All versions employ a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

The voice recognition is not consistent Does not understand what I need when asking for directions or try to give it an address verbally. Navigation system needs better button to stop navigation. Should not have to hit 3 buttons to turn it off. Need the ability to connect more than 1 cell phone system makes you have 1 primary so if husband drives car has to connect phone manually

I didn't realize the vehicle was as wide as it is. The driver's seat is not comfortable. No way to know until hours in seat. Comfort was important, so greatly disappointed in this. Seatbelt on the driver's side very uncomfortable. Ditto as above.

Lots of trinkets and gadgets on the new vehicle. My wife drives it daily for work and it is important to me that she be in a safe vehicle. I purchased the Highlander expecting it to be with us for a minimum of 10 years.
