Toyota C-HR

Introduced as part of a new generation of subcompact crossover SUVs from Toyota in 2018, the C-HR folds car-like sensibilities into an SUV package. While possessing standout styling that’s sure to attract attention, the C-HR may fall short – for some – when it comes to delivering the kind of true utility that is so highly sought after in this segment.

Every vehicle has its own specific look and feel, but few in the subcompact crossover segment are as clearly distinguishable as the C-HR. From an exterior styling standpoint, the C-HR has few equals, as its sloping, swooping design makes it stand out from the crowd, giving it its own distinctive personality. In fact, it’s one of the attributes that has rated highest amongst owners of the C-HR over the years.

Similarly, the C-HR’s handling and maneuverability has also made it a favorable choice amongst owners. Though far from a prime performer thanks to a relatively underwhelming powerplant, the C-HR offers a sporty feel behind the wheel and some enjoyment as a daily driver. The vehicle’s steering is easy and compliant, and provides just enough agility and engagement to make cruising through turns feel relatively fun and effortless.

The C-HR also offers plenty of standard tech that should satisfy car buyers. Since 2019, an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay has been standard on all trim levels; Android Auto integration followed in 2020. Additionally, keyless entry is available on all doors, and the C-HR is equipped with a host of standard driver-assist features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The top-tier Limited trim offers adaptive LED headlights to better illuminate the road going through turns, but that’s more or less the extent of added tech available on the higher level trims. Both the Nightshade and Limited trim levels exist largely as appearance packages.

Toyota C-HR Model Lineup

Part of a seemingly ever-expanding class of subcompact crossovers, the Toyota C-HR makes the most of its limited size with its ability to seat five. Still, it does hold the distinction of being the smallest SUV in Toyota’s lineup, trailing the Corolla Cross, which measures three inches longer.

The C-HR is available in three primary trims: XLE, Nightshade, and Limited. All trims, including the base-level LE, which had been offered prior to the 2022 model year are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 144-horsepower engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive (no all-wheel drive options are available on any C-HR from any model year). Similarly, the XLE, Nightshade, and Limited trims are outfitted with the same 144-horsepower four-banger. No hybrid or electric options are available with the C-HR.

The CH-R is a fun car to drive. I love the sporty style..The safety features including the back up camera and side cameras with the warning lights and sounds are so helpful. If these were on all. [Name] les on the road there would be much fewer accidents.
