Toyota bZ4X

Co-developed with Subaru, the Toyota bZ4X is the first major model from the Japanese automaker to feature an all-electric powertrain. Though it’s a bit late to the EV party, Toyota’s battery-powered sport-ute brings a wide assortment of positive attributes, including a spacious and well-equipped cabin, a comfortable and quiet ride, and an easy-to-use infotainment system. On the downside, the bZ4X can’t match segment leaders for driving range or charging speeds. It also lacks a one-pedal driving mode, which is popular among EV drivers.

Toyota bZ4X Model Lineup

The bZ4X is an all-electric compact crossover SUV that Toyota co-developed with Subaru, whose version is called the Solterra. The five-seater is the only fully electric vehicle (EV) in the Japanese automaker’s lineup, and, in terms of size, has similar dimensions to the RAV4, Toyota’s gasoline-powered small crossover.

Toyota offers both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions of the bZ4X. The FWD model utilizes a 71.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack paired with a single electric motor driving the front wheels. The combination produces a total of 201 horsepower and offers up to 252 miles of range, according to Toyota. The AWD version gets a slightly larger battery pack (72.8-kWh) plus a second electric motor at the rear. It’s rated at 214 hp and up to 228 miles of range. Once depleted, the battery pack (in either version) can be fully recharged in about 11 hours via a 240-volt at-home charger. Using a 100-kW DC fast charger, it can gain an 80% charge in about an hour.

The bZ4X comes in two trims: the well-equipped XLE and the fully loaded Limited. Standard equipment on the XLE includes LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a digital instrument panel, a wireless smartphone charger, and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Also standard is a suite of driving aids that includes forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Stepping up to the Limited trim adds a host of additional features, including a hands-free liftgate, faux leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera. Some notable options include heated rear seats and a premium JBL audio system.
