The 4Runner is a midsize SUV that typically seats five passengers but can fit up to seven with an optional third row. Within Toyota's SUV lineup, it sits between the compact RAV4 and the full-size, three-row Sequoia, and it shares a platform with the Lexus GX, which is a more luxurious and upscale version. The 4Runner’s most recent (fifth) generation debuted in 2010, and received a notable refresh in 2014, offering revised exterior styling and interior upgrades. The 4Runner has long been powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a five-speed automatic transmission and offers both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) options, depending on the trim level. No hybrid or electric versions are available.

In 2020, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration became standard across all trims, replacing a smaller 6.1-inch unit with Bluetooth connectivity. Additionally, the 2020 model year also introduced Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) as a standard feature across all trims. TSS-P is a suite of advanced safety features, including forward collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

For used car shoppers, we recommend considering 2014 and later 4Runners for their updated styling and interior improvements. However, if advanced safety features and smartphone integration are essential, look for a 2020 or newer model. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium trims both offer a good balance of off-road capability and comfort, while the Limited trim provides a more luxurious experience without compromising on utility. Those who require seating for up to seven passengers should look for the SR5 or Limited trims with the optional third-row seat.
