Toyota 4Runner

Since its 1984 debut, the Toyota 4Runner has endeared itself to adventure seekers and families alike. The midsize sport-ute boasts impressive off-road capabilities and towing capacity thanks to its rugged body-on-frame construction and stout V6 engine. It also enjoys Toyota’s well-earned reputation for long-term durability. Enthusiasts appreciate its functional interior and generous cargo space, making it a popular choice for road trips and outdoor excursions. However, some owners have voiced concerns about its dated interior design, subpar fuel economy, and occasionally jittery ride, which can be less refined than its unibody rivals. Despite these drawbacks, the 4Runner continues to carve out a dedicated fan base, who appreciate its distinct blend of utility, ruggedness, and go-anywhere confidence.

Toyota 4Runner Model Lineup

The 4Runner is a midsize SUV that typically seats five passengers but can fit up to seven with an optional third row. Within Toyota's SUV lineup, it sits between the compact RAV4 and the full-size, three-row Sequoia, and it shares a platform with the Lexus GX, which is a more luxurious and upscale version. The 4Runner’s most recent (fifth) generation debuted in 2010, and received a notable refresh in 2014, offering revised exterior styling and interior upgrades. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Toyota offers the 4Runner in various trims, including the SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Nightshade Edition, and TRD Pro. The base SR5 offers a solid set of standard features, while the SR5 Premium adds upgraded interior materials and additional technology. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium focus on enhancing off-road performance. The Limited offers a more luxurious experience with added features and a more refined ride, while the Nightshade Edition is based on the Limited but with blacked-out exterior accents. The TRD Pro is the most off-road-focused version.

The 4Runner has long been powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a five-speed automatic transmission and offers both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) options, depending on the trim level. No hybrid or electric versions are available.

In 2020, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration became standard across all trims, replacing a smaller 6.1-inch unit with Bluetooth connectivity. Additionally, the 2020 model year also introduced Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) as a standard feature across all trims. TSS-P is a suite of advanced safety features, including forward collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

For used car shoppers, we recommend considering 2014 and later 4Runners for their updated styling and interior improvements. However, if advanced safety features and smartphone integration are essential, look for a 2020 or newer model. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium trims both offer a good balance of off-road capability and comfort, while the Limited trim provides a more luxurious experience without compromising on utility. Those who require seating for up to seven passengers should look for the SR5 or Limited trims with the optional third-row seat.
