Tesla Model Y

The Model Y achieves some of the highest EPA range estimates for an electric SUV, particularly the Long Range version, which is rated as high as 330 miles. In Performance trim, which shaves 0-60 acceleration to a scant 3.5 seconds, it’s rated at a maximum of 303 miles.

Tesla does not divulge specifics on the size of its battery packs, but the Model Y’s is estimated at 82 kWh. It takes about 10-12 hours to charge via a 240-volt household outlet. At a fast-charging station, such as those in Tesla’s Supercharger network, it can be juiced from 20% to 80% of capacity in as little as 20 minutes.

The Model Y comes very well equipped in either Long Range or Performance spec. Both feature standard dual-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof – as well as Tesla's suite of driving aids (called Autopilot), which includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. In addition to faster acceleration, the Performance version also features a stiffer suspension and larger wheels to enhance handling. A third row is optional on either version, but it’s too cramped to be suitable for anyone other than children.

Unlike most other automakers, Tesla centralizes nearly all of the Model Y’s cabin instrumentation and controls within a large 15-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard. The interface is well designed; however, having to use a screen to control everything from the seat heaters to the windshield wipers can take some getting used to. Also, notably, neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto is supported.
