Tesla Model 3

Launched in 2017, the Tesla Model 3 has quickly become one of the most popular electric cars of all time. Owners rave about the sedan’s impressive acceleration and handling, user-friendly infotainment system, and advanced Autopilot features. However, some criticisms have arisen concerning build quality and paint issues, which have been noted especially in cars from earlier model years. Additionally, while Tesla's Supercharger network is expanding, some owners who live in rural areas or who take long road trips report occasional charging inconveniences; however, this is not unique to the model. Overall, the Model 3 presents a compelling blend of performance, efficiency, and high-tech features that have earned it a dedicated fanbase.

Tesla Model 3 Model Lineup

The Model 3 is an all-electric compact luxury sedan with seating for up to five passengers. In the Tesla lineup, it is positioned below the larger Model S sedan, and it shares a platform and many components with the Model Y crossover. The Model 3 is currently in its first generation, which launched in 2017, and it received a minor refresh in late 2020, which included tweaks to the exterior, a new center console, improved cabin materials, and the addition of a heat pump for better cold-weather efficiency.

Tesla offers the Model 3 in a few different trims, including the Standard Range Plus, Long Range, and Performance. The Standard Range Plus is the entry-level trim, offering a balance of affordability and features. The Long Range trim, as the name suggests, offers increased range and some additional features. The Performance trim is focused on providing the most dynamic levels of acceleration and handling.

The Standard Range Plus is powered by a single electric motor with approximately 283 horsepower and rear-wheel drive, while the Long Range and Performance trims feature a dual-motor setup with approximately 346 hp and 450 hp, respectively, and all-wheel drive. Battery pack sizes have increased over time, with the current Long Range version offering around 358 miles of range, while the Performance version offers slightly less at around 315 miles due to its focus on speed. The Standard Range Plus offers about 263 miles of range, and the Mid-Range trim, which was discontinued in 2019, offers a similar amount. Home charging with a 240V Level 2 charger adds around 30-40 miles of range per hour.

A 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system controls most of the Model 3’s functions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are not available, as Tesla uses its proprietary system instead. Significant safety features include the manufacturer’s Autopilot system, which offers semi-autonomous driving capabilities, and Full Self-Driving, an optional upgrade that adds more advanced features such as automatic lane changes and traffic light recognition.

For used car shoppers, we recommend buying the most recent Model 3 you can afford since Tesla has been making significant improvements to it year after year. The Long Range trim offers the best balance of range and performance, while the Performance trim is ideal for those seeking the most exhilarating driving experience. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Standard Range Plus still offers a compelling overall package. It's also worth noting that the Model 3’s build quality has generally improved over time.

It's amazing. Like a computer or smartphone on wheels. Constantly feels like the future.

2018 Tesla Model 3

I love my new Model 3, especially the interior. I would describe it as spartan or minimal, its quite different from what's out there and was a large contributing factor to my decision. I'm not in love with the huge display, or the fact that it sometimes wobbles. But overall I love it. Helps me focus on the drive and not the distractions.

2018 Tesla Model 3

I really enjoy my new Tesla, more than any other car I've ever owned. My only complaint is the super charger network. It's not free to use because I didn't purchase a more expensive model - which is a shame. Although I still save a lot of money monthly not paying for gas.

2018 Tesla Model 3

As far as electric cars go, having owned a Chevy Volt, my new Tesla is light years better in every way. I love the way it drives, the way it looks, and I especially love the design of the interior. I was hesitant at first but after sitting and test driving a Model 3 I fell in love. The only critique I can provide is that I wish the quality of the interior was on par with German branded cars. I briefly owned an Audi before my Tesla and there are a few details that I really miss.

2018 Tesla Model 3

I wish I would have had the opportunity to order and purchase the lower spec'd Model 3, but the long range model was all that was available. I also wish the Model 3 had more wheel options, or even more wheel color options within the same designs. But other than these minor gripes I really love my new car. I think anyone looking to buy a Tesla should just remember that Tesla is a new car company and therefore has many kinks to continue working out.

Been watching Tesla for years and recently it seems that after much trouble they've finally created a beautiful car. I think the fact that I chose the Model 3 over a new Mercedes truly says it all.

I didn't really know anything about Tesla until my husband showed me and a few friends at work started getting them. I was hesitant at first about all this new technology but my new Tesla is super fun to drive and overall a blast in every possible way. I love it when strangers ask me questions about it too.

2018 Tesla Model 3

I love my new Tesla, I'm glad I didn't purchase a different electric car with a sub par interior design and or less than 250 miles of range. I was tempted to purchase something more affordable as a daily driver but after reading many many reviews on Tesla I figured I shouldn't worry too much about driving it everyday.

My husband convinced my to get a Tesla due to all the city driving I do. I really enjoy all the storage room and how easy it is to charge the car, its just like plugging in my phone every night.
