Subaru Solterra

The Solterra is Subaru’s first all-electric vehicle. Co-developed with Toyota, the battery-powered compact crossover bolsters Subie’s eco-friendly brand image – and backs it up with actual off-road capabilities, thanks to 8.3 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive. It also comes loaded with standard features, such as Subaru's suite of active safety tech (called EyeSight) which includes adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. On the downside, the Solterra lags behind many rivals when it comes to range and charging speeds. In addition, Subaru loyalists may find it too similar to the Toyota bZ4X, on which it’s based.

Subaru Solterra Model Lineup

The Solterra is an all-electric compact crossover SUV that Subaru co-developed with Toyota, whose version is called the bZ4X. The five-seater is the only electric vehicle (EV) in the Japanese automaker’s lineup, and, in terms of size, has similar dimensions to the Forester, Subaru’s gasoline-powered small crossover.

Motivating the Solterra is a 72.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack paired with two electric motors, one at each axle, enabling standard all-wheel drive. The combination produces a total of 215 horsepower and offers up to 238 miles of range, according to the EPA. Once depleted, the battery pack can be fully recharged in about 11 hours via a 240-volt at-home charger. Using a 100-kW DC fast charger, it can gain an 80% charge in about an hour.

Subaru offers the Solterra in three trims: the entry-level Premium, the mid-range Limited, and the fully loaded Touring. Standard equipment on the Premium includes LED headlights, cloth upholstery, heated front seats, and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Also standard is Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driving aids, which includes forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Stepping up to the Limited trim adds a host of additional features, including a power liftgate, faux leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a surround-view camera, premium Harman Kardon audio, a wireless device charger, and an upgraded 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation. The top-of-the-line Touring also boasts a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and a digital rearview mirror.
