Subaru Legacy

Now in its seventh generation, the Subaru Legacy has certainly lived up to its name. The model’s longtime appeal stems from its ability to balance surprising utility, in the form of a spacious interior and standard all-wheel drive, with understated luxury, reflected in its comfortable ride and advanced safety tech – all without breaking the bank. Some owners report finding the car a bit lacking in power and refinement, especially when equipped with the base engine, as well as occasional frustrations with its infotainment interface. But those letdowns don’t detract too much from the Legacy’s strong overall value proposition.

Subaru Legacy Model Lineup

The Legacy is a midsize sedan capable of seating up to five passengers. It’s the largest sedan in Subaru’s lineup, measuring about eight inches longer than the next smaller model, the compact Impreza. The Legacy shares a platform and some components with the Outback, Subaru’s wagon-like SUV.

Subaru offers the Legacy in a variety of trims, whose names reflect both the equipment level and the engine size. In addition to the base version, buyers can choose from the mid-range Premium and Sport and the high-end Limited and Touring. Since 2018, all levels offer standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The following year, Subaru also made its suite of advanced safety features (called EyeSight) standard, adding desirable equipment such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to all trims.

Most Legacy examples are powered by Subaru’s base-level 2.5i engine, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline mill making between 170 and 182 horsepower, depending on the model year. Additional oomph is available via a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder unit (dubbed 3.6R) – or from its replacement, a 260-hp turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, which first appeared in 2020 and is denoted as XT in the trim name. Like most Subies, the Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). No hybrid or electric versions have been offered.

I do not like the digital display: inside temp, clock, outside temp. I do not like some aspects of the digital control panel I have some suggestions for improvement.
