Subaru BRZ

Since its 2013 debut, the Subaru BRZ has captivated driving enthusiasts with its sleek design, responsive handling, and affordable price. This no-nonsense sports coupe, developed in collaboration with Toyota, attracts buyers who crave something that’s fun to drive, simple to maintain, and easy on the wallet. Owners also praise the BRZ's nimble rear-wheel-drive layout, which sets it apart from most other performance-oriented models in its price range. On the downside, some find its power output disappointing, especially the first-generation's 2.0-liter engine. Additionally, with its small rear seats and limited trunk space, it’s not the most practical car. Despite these drawbacks, the BRZ remains a popular choice that delivers a true sports car experience at an accessible price point.

Subaru BRZ Model Lineup

The Subaru BRZ is a compact sports coupe with room for up to four passengers. It’s the only coupe in Subaru’s lineup, and it shares a platform and many components with the Toyota GR86 (previously known as Scion FR-S), which was developed in conjunction with the BRZ. Subaru introduced the most recent (second) generation in 2022, featuring a more powerful engine, updated styling, and improved technology.

The BRZ comes in a few different trims, including the base Premium, the more upscale Limited, the performance-oriented tS, and the limited-production Series.Blue (2015 only). The Premium includes essential features, while the Limited adds more luxurious items such as heated front seats and leather upholstery. The sportier tS trim was added in 2018, featuring suspension and brake upgrades, unique wheels, and an adjustable carbon-fiber rear spoiler; it was dropped after the 2020 model year.

The BRZ initially featured a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine producing 200 horsepower paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. In the second generation (2022-present), Subaru introduced a more powerful 2.4-liter boxer engine delivering 228 hp, still offering a choice between a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Both versions are rear-wheel drive only.

The BRZ has always included a touchscreen infotainment system, and it added standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration in 2018. The second-gen BRZ (2022-present) features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an improvement over the 7-inch screen in earlier models. However, unlike other Subaru models, most BRZ models do not offer a long list of advanced safety features. Only 2022 and later model years with an automatic transmission offer standard adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

If you're searching for a used BRZ, consider looking for a 2018 or later model to take advantage of standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. For those seeking enhanced performance, the tS trim (2018-2020) is worth considering, while the second-generation models (2022-present) offer not only increased power but also some improved technology features.
