Nissan Titan XD

In the world of full-size trucks, the Titan XD is a bit of a Goldilocks choice. Nissan’s toughest pickup offers more towing and hauling capabilities than the light-duty Titan it’s based on. But it’s not quite as massive or as expensive as its heavy-duty American counterparts, such as the Ford F-250 Super Duty or the Chevrolet Silverado HD. Owners of the Titan XD appreciate it most for its spacious cabin, surprisingly comfortable ride, and overall towing prowess. On the downside, their biggest disappointments stem from the big truck’s notable thirst for fuel and its cumbersome handling and maneuverability around town.

Nissan Titan XD Model Lineup

The Titan XD is a heavy-duty version of Nissan’s full-size pickup truck, the Titan. It’s available in three configurations: a two-door single cab with an 8-foot bed, a four-door extended cab (dubbed King Cab) with a 6.5-foot bed, and a four-door crew cab with a 6.5-foot bed. However, since the 2020 model year, just the crew-cab version has been offered for sale. The Titan XD is the only heavy-duty pickup in Nissan’s truck lineup; it’s also the largest model, measuring about 14 inches longer than the light-duty version of the Titan.

The Titan XD is available in a range of trims. The S is a basic work truck, offering a smattering of standard features, including power windows, air conditioning, cruise control, and steel wheels. A 7.0-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration joined the list of standard features in 2019. The following year, Nissan also added automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, and trailer sway control as standard features while upgrading the infotainment system to an 8.0-inch display. To get more creature comforts, buyers must step up to either the mid-level SV or SL trims or to the fully loaded Platinum Reserve. These can be fitted with additional goodies such as parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation and a surround-view camera. Those planning to venture off-road should opt for the Pro-4X trim, which comes standard with four-wheel drive (4WD), all-terrain tires, off-road shock absorbers, a two-speed transfer case, a locking rear differential, skid plates, and hill-descent control.

Under the hood, the Titan XD offers a choice of gasoline or diesel power. The standard gasoline engine is a 5.6-liter V8 that makes 390-400 horsepower and 401-413 lb-ft of torque (depending on the year), while the optional diesel offering (available through 2019) is a 5.0-liter Cummins-sourced V8 with 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. The gas V8 was backed by a seven-speed automatic transmission until the 2020 model year, when it was upgraded to a nine-speed unit. The diesel engine is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic. Both versions get rear-wheel drive standard but can be equipped with 4WD as an option. No hybrid or electric variants have been made.

2016 Nissan Titan XD PRO-4X Crew Cab - 4WD

Do not buy the Titan XD until Nissan corrects the MANY, MANY issues with this truck such as the transmission's lack of communication with the engine (i.e.-HORRIBLE shifting issues-that leave me wondering if the transmission is being damaged), dead pedal issue- complete unreliability of acceleration (MAJOR safety hazard-I don't dare lend my truck to someone for fear they will get seriously injured/killed), constant exhaust system regens and DEF use, front heated seats that scorch one side of the butt and don't heat the other, constant drifting to the right and pre-mature tire wear
