Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima has long attracted buyers seeking a blend of performance, style, and comfort in a full-size sedan. With a rich history dating back to the 1980s, Nissan’s “four-door sports car,” as it’s fondly known by fans, has gained a loyal following thanks to its spirited acceleration and composed handling. Owners also appreciate its spacious, well-appointed cabin. That said, some note that the Maxima's rear-seat headroom and legroom are somewhat limited compared to rivals. Additionally, its continuously variable transmission (CVT) may not satisfy those who enjoy the feel of a traditional gearbox. Overall, though, the Maxima remains a solid choice for drivers looking for a stylish, performance-oriented sedan with a touch of luxury.

Nissan Maxima Model Lineup

The Maxima is a full-size sedan that offers seating for up to five passengers. It’s the largest sedan in the Nissan lineup, slotting above the midsize Altima. Its most recent (eighth) generation debuted in 2015 (for the 2016 model year), featuring more aggressive exterior styling, improved handling, and upgraded technology features.

Nissan offers the Maxima in various trims, including the S, SV, SL, SR, and Platinum. The base S offers essential features, while the SV adds some luxuries, such as leather seats and navigation. The SL brings even more premium goodies, such as a panoramic sunroof and an upgraded audio system. The performance-oriented SR offers a sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters, and unique styling elements. The Platinum goes all-in with high-end features, such as quilted leather seats and a 360-degree camera system.

Since 2009, the Maxima has employed a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing around 300 horsepower. It is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and is exclusively front-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric powertrain options have been offered by the automaker thus far.

Inside the Maxima’s cabin, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration became standard starting from the 2017 model year. Additionally, numerous advanced safety features have been introduced through the years, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision mitigation. Most of these became standard starting with the 2021 model year.

If you're shopping for a used Nissan Maxima, consider looking for models from the eighth generation (2016 and newer) that benefit from an updated design and improved handling. Within this generation, models from 2017 onwards offer standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. For a balance of luxury and sportiness, the SL or SR trims are good choices.

I loved my old 209 Max but I found out that after about 80000 miles my head gaskets were leaking and the cost was going to be 4000 dollars. In doing research I found out it was a defective head gasket and lots of people were having an issue with this. What makes me angry is that Nissan did not have a recall on this. Very poor customer relations. Because I loved the Max I bought another one but in research I have found out that this problem has been corrected.

I really wish my car came with auto start. Then I could warm up my car while I'm still in the house. I think that would be a GREAT feature.

Would appreciate being able to download the brochure and owner's manuals online, especially the brochure and list of accessories for the 2014 model.

Couldn't remove unwanted selection--don't have convertible roof. I'm over 6 feet tall and entry is a problem However, sitting and driving is delightful. "Butt" commands or malfunctions occasionally unlock trunk compromising security. Need accessible indication of oil pressure. I'm a very light-footed driver and feel economy should be somewhat better. I live 6 miles out of town 200 yards out a good solid dirt road and 99% of my driving is on good paved roads with relatively level terrain, mostly about 45 MPH. Once a week I hit interstate for about 45 miles each way at a rate of 65 to 75 and on cruise control. MPG increases appreciably at higher speeds. So far, I'm very well-pleased with my purchase. Just not getting advertised fuel economy you promised. Ease of handling and performance are terrific! 19.5 is far below thirty. I'm not driving mostly city miles--on the contrary, mostly rural. I'm not a speed demon; I drive conservatively. 90% of my driving is between 45 and 70; about 40-50% on I-65 and between 55 and 70 mph. So far my economy has gone up to 19.7 but back down to 19.5 mpg. Maybe when I go more on the interstate my economy will improve. And the economy indicator seems to be for the life of the vehicle--not for the current/last tankful.

2014 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SV

The Maxima I bought has a speed control downshift that I do not like and wish it did not. It is a 350 hp engine sports model, and gets 22 mpg, which I dislike. Only regret is that this "governor" effect on my driving doesn't allow the car to coast like my new Avalon, and that is crazy to me. Also, I tried to contact Nissan's national website about this transmission control, and they never even bothered to get back to me.

Lots of wind and tire noise. Rougher ride than my old Buick.
