Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima has been a staple in the midsize sedan segment since the early 1990s. Offering buyers an appealing blend of affordability, fuel efficiency, and practicality, it has garnered a loyal following over the years. However, some owners have reported concerns about its long-term reliability, especially in comparison to rivals such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Its continuously variable transmission (CVT) has also been a source of mixed reviews, with some praising its smoothness and others criticizing it for being noisy or unresponsive. Overall, though, the Altima is a competent option for those in search of a well-rounded, spacious, and value-oriented family sedan.

Nissan Altima Model Lineup

The Altima is a midsize sedan with room for up to five passengers. In Nissan's lineup, it slots between the compact Sentra and the full-size Maxima. Its most recent (sixth) generation debuted in 2019, offering a bolder design, a more upscale interior, and additional advanced safety features.

The Altima comes in a range of trims, including the base S, the sporty SR, the well-equipped SV, the upscale SL, and the top-of-the-line Platinum. Between the entry-level S and the fully loaded Platinum, the SV and SR trims cater to drivers seeking a balance between affordability and features, while the SL trim offers a more premium experience with niceties such as leather upholstery and an upgraded audio system.

The fifth-generation Altima (2013-2018) offers the choice between a base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 182 horsepower and an available 3.5-liter V6 with 270 hp. Both are mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with front-wheel drive. For the sixth generation (2019-present), the 3.5-liter V6 was replaced by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 248 hp, while the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder was upgraded to 188 hp. Both engines are paired with a CVT, with all-wheel drive available with the 2.5-liter engine.

Since 2016, a 5-inch infotainment screen became standard on the Altima, with an upgraded 7-inch screen available on higher-level trims or as an option. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration was first introduced in 2018 and became standard on most trims in 2019, along with an 8-inch touchscreen. In 2019, the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of advanced safety features became available, offering collision-mitigation braking and lane departure warning. Adaptive cruise control was added to the SL and Platinum trims in 2016 and became standard on the SV trim in 2019.

For used car buyers interested in the Altima, we recommend 2019 and later models for their balance of updated styling, advanced safety features, and improved powertrains. Specifically, the SV trim provides a well-rounded package with a comprehensive suite of safety features, modern infotainment options, and a comfortable ride. Those who prefer more power and sportiness should consider the SR trim with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

I do wish that it had a too close in front warning. It has everything else.

It's a great car for the value. I enjoy the way it drives and handles. I have added over $1800.00 dollars in after-market chrome trim, chrome wheels, chrome interior and wood-grain dash-board. Chrome Front Grille, chrome lower grille, chrome trim around headlights and tail-lights. Chrome side molding, rocker panel and window panels in pillars. Chrome in trunk edging, Spoiler, Roof spoiler, chrome license rear panel, chrome license plate covers. Chrome trim on roof top going from the hood to the trunk, Chrome lighted kick panels. Stenciled Altima lettering and custom wheel center caps saying Altima with chrome wheels.

Wish I would have gotten the back up camera. Would have liked to have the back-up/rear camera installed.

I have never shopped for a new car before. I hope when the time comes again to purchase another vehicle, my experience is the same.
