MINI Convertible

Mini introduced a convertible version of its iconic Cooper hatchback in 2005. Since then, it’s been one of the most beloved drop-tops on the market, boasting the brand’s signature go-kart-like handling and retro cool design. Owners of the Mini Convertible give it high marks for those qualities as well as its peppy turbocharged engines, which deliver plenty of driving excitement, especially when paired with the available manual transmission. On the downside, some find the Convertible's ride quality a bit on the harsh side. Additionally, as you might expect from a subcompact car, passenger and cargo room is limited. Also, Android Auto integration isn’t available.

MINI Convertible Model Lineup

The Mini Convertible is a premium subcompact convertible with room for up to four passengers. It’s the only drop-top in the British automaker’s lineup and shares a platform and many components with its sister model, the Mini Hardtop.

Mini offers the Convertible in three main trims: the entry-level Cooper, the sportier Cooper S, and the high-performance John Cooper Works (JCW). In second-generation models (2009-2015), the Convertible utilizes a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 121 horsepower in the Cooper, 181 hp in the Cooper S, and 208 hp in the JCW. With the debut of the third-gen Convertible in 2016, Mini swapped a 134-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder into the base Cooper, while the higher trims were upgraded to a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, offering 189 hp in the Cooper S and 228 hp in the JCW. Most versions can be equipped with either a manual or an automatic transmission; however, the JCW trim became automatic only starting in 2020.

Standard equipment on the Convertible includes a power-retractable soft top, keyless entry, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, cruise control, faux leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 6.5-inch infotainment display, which was upgraded to 8.8 inches in 2022. LED headlights also became standard in 2022. Apple CarPlay integration first appeared (as an option) in 2019 and became standard equipment in 2023; Android Auto, on the other hand, has yet to be offered. Forward collision mitigation became a standard safety feature in 2020 and was followed by lane-departure warning in 2020; however, most other active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, are optional. Other notable options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, premium Harman Kardon audio, navigation, a wireless smartphone charger, and automated parking.

2015 MINI Cooper S Convertible

This is the first MINI I have owned and it is the most, all around, fun car I have ever had. No it doesn't have as much power as my Corvette or Mustang did but for street use it has almost as much as anyone can legally use. It handles great, and it still gets great fuel mileage even when I drive it hard. I like it so much I do not plan to keep it. As soon as the new 2016 JCW convertibles are available I plan to sell this and upgrade to the new model.

I love my MINI. I have dreamed of owning own since they hit the US. My dream has come true and it is so much fun to drive and own. I am thinking of starting a MINI club in Connecticut.

We are a retired couple enjoying our retirement. We choose our MINI cooper Highgate Convertible because we wanted a smaller car, a rag-top, and great leather seats, amenities, etc. the MINI has all of that and something we certainly didn't plan on: our total enjoyment in motoring in it. Even our pups love going in it. Can't ask and we don't want anymore than lots of smiles over the miles.

I love my car. I am extremely cautious and concerned about the visibility out the rear window and the extremely large blind spot at rear right passenger area. It is impossible to see a small car or motorcycle that may be in my blind spot. It seems that the design could have been such to create wider rear windows providing greater visibility. This truly needs to change. A rear camera I would think would be a staple in this vehicle as well. Sitting so low with such a small rear window, once again creates a great potential problem. Thank you for your consideration. I love nearly everything about my new vehicle! I can only think of one concern. The rear visibility when the convertible top is up, is incredibly limited, and concerns me.

Car should have a backup camera that works with the navigation system. The Model S should have the option of a backup camera that is integrated into the NAV system. Also The NAV system should display the direction the car is traveling instead of "true north".

The backup camera system is terrible. The cartoon picture is a joke. To frequently it does not provide a warning that a car or person is getting close to the rear of the car when backing up. There is a bad blindside on the rear passenger side and a better rear camera system vs the sensor system employed would be better. Also the Navigation screens are not the best. Better ones off my cell phone. The current Nav screen does not show what direction you're going if you're not going north. A big downer.

Would prefer to have windows open on the door, not in the middle console. Cannot change song on Aux, with phone plugged in. Would be so much better if there were controls. I have been told I have Sirius but cannot find, and Broker was unhelpful.
