Lexus RX

The Lexus RX has been a symbol of luxury and refinement since its 1998 debut. Known for its plush interior, smooth ride, and strong reliability record, the cushy crossover has consistently attracted upscale families and professionals who prioritize a comfortable and hassle-free driving experience. Owners rave about its superior build quality, velvety powertrain, and advanced safety features. However, some find its infotainment system less than intuitive to use, and those looking for a sporty driving experience will likely be disappointed. Nevertheless, the RX remains a popular choice for buyers who value the automaker’s long-standing reputation for reliability and customer satisfaction.

Lexus RX Model Lineup

The RX is a midsize luxury SUV that seats up to five passengers. Lexus also offers a three-row version called the RX L which increases its seating capacity to seven. The RX slots between the compact NX and the larger GX in the automaker’s sport-ute lineup, and it shares a platform and some components with the Toyota Highlander, which is built by Lexus’ parent company. The RX is currently in its fourth generation, which first appeared in 2016, offering more aggressive exterior styling, improved driving dynamics, and enhanced safety features. A fifth generation is expected to debut for the 2023 model year.

The Lexus offers the RX in a range of trims, including the RX 350, RX 350 F Sport, RX 450h, RX 450h F Sport, RX 350L, and RX 450hL. The base RX 350 and RX 350L offer a well-appointed interior and a comfortable ride, while their F Sport variants add sporty elements and a more aggressive appearance. The 450h, 450h F Sport, and 450hL are hybrid models, offering increased fuel efficiency.

Starting with the fourth generation in 2016, the RX 350 and RX 350L received an updated 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 295 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The RX 450h, RX 450h F Sport, and RX 450hL have a hybrid powertrain that combines the 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor, providing a total system output of 308 hp. Hybrid models come standard with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive.

Since 2016, the RX has offered a standard 8-inch infotainment screen with an available 12.3-inch upgrade, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration became standard starting in 2020. The Lexus Safety System+ was also introduced in 2016, offering adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, and lane-keeping assist, and it became standard starting with the 2018 model year.

For used car buyers, we recommend 2016 or later Lexus RX models due to their refreshed design, revised powertrains, and additional safety features. For those interested in a hybrid SUV, the RX 450h offers a good balance of luxury, performance, and fuel efficiency. Otherwise, the base RX 350 provides a generous allotment of features and solid performance at a lower price.

Very wimpy, and delayed acceleration from START presents dangerously hazardous conditions in the traffic for the driver and passengers. Appropriate name for the car should be "WIMP" instead of "F Sport"

It would be nice if rear view mirror had additional mirror to see in back. My 2008 CRV had it, and it was very handy to see children, dog, and passengers in back seat. Front windshield, I find it hard to see people standing on curbs, when turning left or right corners. View is blocked.

2015 Lexus RX 350 AWD

It is a great vehicle! BUT when accelerating from a stop, the car hesitates for 3-5 seconds. I find this concerning.

The shade that covers packages in the cargo area gets in the way of loading.
