Lexus GX

The GX 460 is an upscale version of Toyota’s venerable 4Runner, a rugged body-on-frame SUV with class-leading off-road abilities. The Lexus edition adds premium styling and features without sacrificing much of the rig’s underlying talent for adventure. Owners praise the GX not only for its four-wheel-drive prowess but also for its quiet and high-quality interior, which provides a commanding view of the road (or trail) ahead. Reliability is also a strong suit. Complaints come chiefly from its big V8, which tends to drink down fuel while providing only mediocre oomph, as well as its cramped third row, which is suitable mainly for children.

Lexus GX Model Lineup

The GX 460 is a midsize three-row luxury SUV with room for six or seven people, depending on the configuration. It’s the second-largest model in the Lexus sport-ute lineup, slotting between the full-size LX and the midsize RX. The GX shares a platform and some components with the Toyota 4Runner, which is sold by Lexus’ parent company. Its maximum towing capacity is 6,500 pounds (when properly equipped).

Lexus offers the GX 460 in a few different trims, starting with the well-equipped base model and increasing in amenities with the mid-tier Premium and range-topping Luxury versions. All examples come standard with numerous high-end features, including automatic climate control, a sunroof, and a rearview camera. Adaptive cruise control has long been available as an option and became standard in 2020, along with blind-spot warning and lane-keeping assist. Smartphone integration lagged behind, however, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added only recently (for 2022 and later models).

Under the hood, the GX 460 sports a 4.6-liter V8 gasoline engine making 301 horsepower. Mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission, it powers all four wheels via full-time four-wheel drive and also boasts a dual-range transfer case and available low-speed Crawl Control. No hybrid or electric versions have been offered.
