Kia Forte

Since its 2010 introduction, the Kia Forte has become a popular choice for those who want a practical car with plenty of features for the money. Owners also praise the compact sedan for its impressive fuel economy, relatively spacious interior, and easy-to-use tech, attributes that make it an appealing option for daily commuters. On the downside, some note that its standard engine feels a bit underpowered and that its ride quality can be overly firm at times. Nevertheless, the Forte holds its own against segment leaders such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla thanks to its generous list of standard equipment and its attractive design.

Kia Forte Model Lineup

The Forte is a compact sedan that seats up to five passengers. In Kia’s sedan lineup, it slots between the subcompact Rio and the midsize K5 (formerly known as the Optima), and it shares a platform and some components with the Hyundai Elantra, which is built by Kia’s sister company. In the past, the automaker has also offered the Forte in a two-door version called the Forte Koup (discontinued in 2017) and in a hatchback called the Forte5 (discontinued in 2019); these models are reviewed separately.

In recent years, Kia has sold the Forte in a range of trim levels, including the entry-level FE (formerly called LX), the mid-level LXS, the sporty GT-Line (formerly called S), and the upscale EX. At the top of the range is the performance-oriented GT trim, which debuted in 2020 and comes with a more powerful turbocharged engine, a sport-tuned suspension, and larger brakes.

The third-generation Forte debuted in 2019, offering an all-new design with a roomier cabin and more tech features, including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. An array of driver aids also joined the equipment list, including standard automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist and optional adaptive cruise control. The third-gen Forte underwent a minor refresh in 2022 that updated its styling and added lane-centering assist as well as wireless smartphone connectivity.

Under the hood, the Forte comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 147 horsepower. Since 2019, it’s been mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); earlier versions utilize a six-speed automatic. A six-speed manual gearbox is also available on some lower-level trims (such as the FE). The top-of-the-line GT trim comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 201 hp, paired with either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual. All versions of the Forte are front-wheel drive (only).

Hard vibration with back windows down, hurts the ears. Aerodynamic issues?

Did not know and am not happy with the soft trim on the bottom of the Forte. Would not have purchased it if I had known.

It's our little commuter car and making runs to Walmart. But, we are starting to drive the Forte everywhere... it's a fun car to drive. MY ONLY PROBLEM is the alarm button on the POD (?). I've accidentally hit this button about a half dozen times. You need to fix this issue... maybe pressing the button twice but the way it is now, it is too sensitive. It has really pissed me off, alarm going off.

2015 Kia Forte SX Coupe

I loved my 2012 Kia Forte but mileage was getting too high. There are two things I would change if I could with my 2015. The seat belts are very frustrating to use. They are hard to get a hold of but worse than that they do not go back once released. Being a "sporty" car does not help with the fact that the space for the seats (especially the movement of the front seat. The headrest is so close to the roof that I have to move the headrest in order to get my seat to adjust. I had great gas mileage on my 4 door Forte so need to realize that this is the difference in having a "sporty" look vs. 4 door vehicle. Again, I love my car but get very frustrated using the seat belt (which is every time I am in the vehicle).

It would be nice if when you open the sun roof, a vent in the back would open to let out the over pressure. It would be nice, if when you open the moon roof/sun roof that a vent somewhere in the car would let the air out the back in so you don't get the air pressure.
