Jeep Renegade

The Renegade melds classic Jeep ruggedness with modern amenities. Introduced in 2015, Jeep’s smallest model appeals to a diverse audience, from outdoor enthusiasts to daily commuters seeking a versatile and stylish ride. Owners often praise the Renegade for its tough-but-cute design, engaging on-road feel, and remarkable off-road abilities, especially for its class. However, some find its base engine somewhat underpowered and its interior materials lacking in quality. Additionally, cargo space is limited compared to rivals. Nevertheless, the Renegade remains a compelling option for those who crave an outdoorsy sport-ute with a dash of urban sophistication.

Jeep Renegade Model Lineup

The Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV with seating for up to five passengers. It’s Jeep’s smallest model, slotting below the Compass, and it shares a platform with the Fiat 500X, which is made by Jeep’s sister company within the Stellantis Group of automotive brands. The Renegade’s current (second) generation debuted in 2019, featuring an updated exterior design, a new turbocharged engine, a more modern interior, and additional tech.

The Renegade comes in a range of trims, including Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. The Sport focuses on affordability, offering essential features and cloth upholstery. The Latitude adds more comfort and convenience features, such as upgraded upholstery and additional driver-assistance tech. The Limited caters to those seeking luxury touches, such as leather upholstery, heated seats, and advanced safety features. The Trailhawk is designed for off-roading enthusiasts, boasting a higher ground clearance, unique suspension components, and additional skid plates.

The Renegade initially offered a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 160 horsepower and a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder producing 180 hp. In 2019, the 1.4-liter engine was replaced by a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 177 hp, improving both efficiency and performance. Throughout its production, the Renegade has utilized a 9-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel drive being standard and four-wheel drive available as an option.

The Renegade debuted with a standard 5-inch infotainment display, and upgraded 7-inch and 8.4-inch units with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration first became available in 2018. Some notable active safety features, such as forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning, have been available since 2015. In 2019, adaptive cruise control was first offered, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-path detection became standard in 2021.

We recommend that used car buyers interested in a Renegade focus their searches on second-generation models (2019 or newer), which benefit from an updated design, improved technology features, and a more efficient 1.3-liter turbocharged powerplant. The Trailhawk trim is a good choice for those who prioritize off-road capabilities, while the Latitude or Limited trims offer a smart balance of comfort, features, and value.

There are only 2 things that I think need improvement on my new jeep renegade: 1) The engine power when merging onto an expressway is sluggish. Once you are up to speed all is fine, but I have found I need to be very careful merging into traffic that is already moving at 65-70 mph. 2) The navigation/map screen is extremely hard to read with the gray tone colors available. Why is there no color map option?

The only complaint I have with the entire vehicle is that, when it rains or the roof gets wet for any reason, when the door or window is opened, the water from the roof drips directly inside and either lands on the seat or the inside of the door and everything gets wet.

Love the Jeep, hate the issues I am having with it. I was in love with my Renegade, until the issues, as I was told, could not be fixed. Very LOUD noise and vibration occurs when I start to slow down or coast. Was told nothing to worry about and that the technician test drove and the noise never occurred. I have had the Jeep in twice for this issue, and no solution. VERY UPSETTING. Also, when taking off when first starting the vehicle, jerks into first gear. Feels like the transmission is going to fall out the bottom.

Check engine light randomly comes on, through forums this seems to be a common issue.

Does not have trip mileage indicator. When in cruise control, or stopping cruise control, mileage indicator vanished.

I love mostly everything about it. But the 9 speed transmission takes a bit to get used to. It accelerates very slow from a dead stop and acts strange going down hills. If there is any water from a rainfall, and you crack your windows water pours in on the window controls. Not cool. :)
