Jaguar XE

Produced from 2017 through 2020, the XE is an exciting alternative to more familiar nameplates in the compact sports sedan segment, such as the BMW 3 Series. The small British four-door leans into its Jaguar heritage, offering classy good looks, a refined cabin, and an available supercharged V6 with well over 300 horsepower. Owners of the XE name handling, acceleration, and ride comfort among their favorite attributes. On the downside, they call out its cramped rear seat and lack of cargo space, areas where the baby Jag lags slightly behind the competition.

Jaguar XE Model Lineup

The XE is a premium compact sedan with room for up to five people. It’s the smallest four-door offered by Jaguar, slotting below the midsize XF, which is about a foot longer. The British automaker discontinued the XE in the U.S. after the 2020 model year; however, it’s still offered in other markets.

Jaguar sold the XE in a wide variety of trims, including the base, the mid-range Premium, the well-equipped Prestige, the tech-oriented Portfolio, the performance-themed R-Sport, and the high-performance S. For 2019, the R-Sport was also available in two alternate versions, the 300 Sport and the Landmark, which boast unique colors and wheel designs. In its final year, the XE trim lineup was reduced to two: the entry-level S (not to be confused with the high-performance S version from prior years) and the sportier R-Dynamic S. The base trim offers some notable premium features, including dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen (upgraded to a 10.0-inch unit for 2019). But buyers will have to opt for one of the higher trims to get luxuries such as navigation, heated front seats, or an adaptive suspension. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto first became available as options in 2019 and were made standard the following year. Jaguar also added forward collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist to the standard-feature list in 2020. Other safety tech, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot warning, is optional.

The XE can be fitted with a number of different engines. Most versions utilize a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (dubbed “25t” or “P250), which provides 240-247 horsepower, depending on the model year. An optional, higher-output version (“30t” or “P300”) debuted in 2019, upping power to 296 ponies. Diesel fans will be happy to know that a 2.0-liter turbodiesel (“20d”) was available on the XE through 2019. It delivers 180 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque as well as up to 36 mpg in mixed driving, according to the EPA. For the performance-minded, a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 (“35t”) provides the most power of the bunch with 340-380 hp, depending on the year and trim; the high-output mill was available through 2019. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on all versions. It sends power to the rear wheels, unless the car is equipped with optional all-wheel drive. No hybrid or electric versions were sold.

2017 Jaguar XE 20d R-Sport AWD

The interior has a refinement that is not present in other makes. Their is a simplicity of design but the car does everything. I love the lack of clutter and endless buttons.

2017 Jaguar XE 20d Base RWD

Great driving dynamics. Fully connected to the road but disconnected from the jarring jolts. Beautiful car. Great standard technology. Not a car you see very often. Perfect car overall.

Smoothest ride ever. Best power ever. Quiet ride, allowing you to listen to the stereo without background noise. A pleasure to drive.

Even if you don't like to drive, you will love driving this car. It handles well, even in poor road conditions, but unlike other fast cars, it never gets away from me. Love this car.

2017 Jaguar XE 35t Premium RWD

The Jaguar XE 35t is a FUN car to drive. You don't quite understand the reality that you are literally riding on top of an literally animalistic jaguar of a car until you hit that pedal and you realize "Hey, my heart is now in the back seat, I should go get it after I'm done". It's exhilarating, and comfortable. Now hey, I'll be honest, there are some features that my 2012 Chevy Volt had, that I just sort of expected from a Jag, like proximity door unlock, or HID headlights, but they brought other new luxury features to the game that my Volt was way under the curve on: heated steering wheel, heated seats, de-icing front windshield, massive sunroof, Bluetooth audio, dynamic reverse camera, and so on and so forth...So it's really no comparison to my Volt in terms of features overall. Basically, get this car if you want to feel like a billion bucks.

On paper, there may be better vehicles out there. However, few vehicles will put a smile on your face or make you feel special in the way this Jaguar XE does, even after owning it for a while. If considering any luxury sports sedan, definitely consider the XE. Additionally, if considering alternative fuel vehicles, definitely look at diesel options.
