Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is a perennial challenger to the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Honda Accord Hybrid for top honors in its class. Stylish from the curb and economical at the pump (offering as much as 47 mpg in mixed driving), the Sonata Hybrid also boasts a strong list of tech and safety features in addition to its relatively low running costs. Some owners complain that it lacks gusto under the hood and does little to hush road noise inside the cabin. But for those who value great fuel economy in an affordable package, these are relatively minor gripes.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Model Lineup

The Sonata Hybrid is a hybrid variant of Hyundai’s midsize sedan, the Sonata. The five-seater is the largest hybrid sedan produced by the Korean automaker, measuring about nine inches longer than the compact Elantra Hybrid. Hyundai also offers a plug-in hybrid version of the Sonata, which is reviewed separately.

Hyundai has built the Sonata Hybrid in a variety of trims over the years. The SE served as the base-level trim until 2020, when the Blue replaced it as the new entry-level version. That same year, the mid-tier SEL trim joined the lineup. Meanwhile, the Limited has been the range-topping trim since 2013. All versions come relatively well-equipped, especially in recent model years. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrived as standard features in 2017, blind-spot warning followed a year later, and in 2020 Hyundai also added forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Some notable options include ventilated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, a 10.3-inch center touchscreen, a surround-view camera, and parking sensors.

From 2011 through 2015, the Sonata Hybrid was outfitted with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that combine to produce just over 200 horsepower and return 38 mpg in mixed driving, per EPA estimates. In 2016, that powertrain was replaced by a 2.0-liter inline-four that pairs with an electric motor to develop 192 hp and get an EPA-estimated 42 mpg (combined). Finally, in 2020, the powertrain was revised for even better fuel efficiency, earning a 47 mpg (combined) rating. All versions employ a six-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the front wheels (only).

2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

5.0

Listen I have owned a lot of vehicles and this one far exceeds anything I've ever owned or could want, it has every possible option, some I don't even think I need but love that it has. I'm so happy with this choice, it's unique, it's smart and it's a good-looking vehicle. I will never own another General Motors vehicle I love Hyundai. I love this car... hybrid. Limited. It's very nice.

2014 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Love the ride and quietness of the car. Have to be careful about turning off the engine when parked just so quiet. Looking forward to taking long trips in the car.
